Canso (2001 population: 992) is a small Canadian town in Guysborough County, on the north-eastern tip of mainland Nova Scotia.
Canso entered into a state of decline during the 1980s and 1990s, with many attempts by local politicians to secure the rights for the plant to process other seafood fished in other parts of Canadian waters, or internationally, but to no avail.
From the 1996 census to the 2001 census, Canso's population declined 12% from 1,127 to 992.

At this time the Canso was carrying 12 people, four 250 pound depth charges, normal emergency gear and about 750 gallons of fuel.
Three of the crew were unhurt, one pilot had a fractured forehead and a broken nose and another crew member had a sprained ankle while the others had numerous scrapes, cuts and bruises – all fortunately minor.
Following a long walk through the very wet forest and just before reaching the crash site, one could see a big crater which is where the military blew up the depth charges carried on board the Canso.

The pipers of the PPCLI, two of who were awarded the DCM played the leading wave of the battalion up the lip of the crater of Vimy Ridge in April, 1917.
The 13th Royal Highlanders of Canada (Black Watch) seemed to have been very badly handicapped at the outset of the war by the lack of pipers, only five having gone out with the original contingent and two of the pipers were lost in battle of Ypres in April, 1915.
The Band made its first public appearance fittingly on Cape Breton Island on the occasion of the official opening of the Canso Causeway, August 13th, 1955.

After an intermission during which he was on the construction of the railway between Digby and Yarmouth, he became divisional engineer on the survey and construction of the railway between New Glasgow and the Strait of Canso.
On the completion of that work he was appointed resident chief engineer of survey and construction of the Cape Breton railway from the Strait of Canso to Sydney.

You can save yourself some time by jumping to the best part: the one real road from New Brunswick into Nova Scotia, the tourist centre at Amherst NS (with a clock to show peak tides at the tidal bore of the Bay of Fundy).
Then along the northern edge of Nova Scotia's mainland (on a map, this is the part that looks like the head of a pig, with the ear near Antigonish), over the Canso Causeway and onto Cape Breton.
No fabulous nightlife, but the rolling hills, valleys that reminded Scots settlers of their distant Highlands, and waiting at the end of it all, the Cabot Trail.

I'd heard a lot of things about our Maritime provinces so I was prepared to be let down but there are some things you can't over-hype and one of them is Cape Breton.
I headed across the Canso Causeway and up along Bras D'Or Lake to Baddeck to take in the Alexander Graham Bell Museum.
Baddeck is town where Bell chose to live after the fame of his telephone invention and because he didn't like the summer heat of Washington DC.
