CANTACUZINO, CANTACUZEN Or CANTACUZENE, the name of a family which traces its origin to the Byzantine emperors and writers of the same name (see under JOHN V., Cantacuzene).
The founder of the family, Andronik, migrated to Rumania in 1633, and from his two sons Constantine and Gheorge sprang the two principal lines which afterwards branched into numerous families of nobles and high dignitaries, including hospodars (rulers) of Walachia and Moldavia.
He served under the Turks in the siege of Vienna, and when they were defeated it is alleged that he conceived the plan of marching on Constantinople to drive the Turks out of Europe, the western powers having promised him their moral support.

Therefore, Princess Cantacuzino was proposing a national regeneration project articulated in the language of moral redemption which did not presuppose a radical break with the past (since the woman was considered the link between past and future) but the rediscovery of the authentic origins of the nation through and within Romanian women.
From the perspective of this conceptualization of modernity, Princess Cantacuzino advocates the need of a strong, responsible state rather than of one devoted to liberal policies and her attitude in this matter corresponds to a traditionalist view in which the formation of the moral and social education basis is the obligation of the state.
Princess Cantacuzino’s attitude towards the ‘minority problem’ corresponds to the main politics and also, because of her involvement in the discussion of minority rights within the framework of the League of Nations and of other international feminist organizations, her arguments are pointing to the legitimacy of some of minorities’ claims.

Fifty years of communism with its forced politics of industrialization and its implicit displacement of peasants from rural to the urban areas have not succeeded in radically changing the representation of man’s and woman’s roles.
