  Canter Balance
Cantering on a circle has much the same effect on the horse than circling or bending the horse at the walk or trot.
In the canter leg-yield in a circle with the head to the outside and moving to the left, the horse would maintain the left lead and the rider uses the inside leg (right) to push the horse onto the outside rein and leg (the left rein and leg behind the girth forming a ‘wall’).
Once the counter canter is well established the rider can ride a serpentine at the canter in which the horse will be on the regular lead part of the time and on the counter canter the rest of the time (Figure 9-10).

The four beat canter mostly comes about from the horse not stepping through the rein and going forward, the activity is inadequate in the hindquarters.
Some horses are naturally more talented for canter and in exercises like flying changes, the quality of the flying change depends on the quality of the canter; if you have a good canter stride, you normally have a good flying change.
The canter for the horse is a natural movement, like walk, and you cannot restrict that movement or go against it.

The so-called four-beat canter (gallop) is not a gait, but it is a movement of a horse in the gallop leg-interchange that was either forced on the horse or learned by the horse when loafing while ridden.
The words like lope or canter merely refer to a particular speed in gallop just as in the same way in the western pleasure lingo the word jog actually means very slow trot, while elsewhere it is just another word for trot.
Canter: A smooth gait, especially of a horse, that is slower than a gallop but faster than a trot.

Freedom & Regularity of The Canter
Email Me The canter is a pace of "three time", where at canter to the right, for instance, the footfalls follow one another as follows: left hind, left diagonal (simultaneously left fore and right hind), right fore, followed by a movement of suspension with all four feet in the air before the next stride begins.
The collected canter is marked by the lightness of the forehand and the engagement of the hindquarters: i.e., is characterised by supple, free and mobile shoulders and very active quarters.
This is a pace between the collected and the medium canter in which a horse, not yet trained and ready for collected movements, shows himself properly balanced and remaining on the bit, goes forward with even, light and cadenced strides and good hock action.

Canter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The speed of the canter varies between 10-17 mph, depending on the length of the stride of the horse.
The canter and gallop are related gaits, as the rider simply asks the horse to gallop from the canter by allowing it to lengthen its stride until it is four-beat, rather than three-beat.
Additionally, the rider may ask for the canter as the horse jumps a fence (if the fence was taken at the walk, trot, or halt) or may ask for the horse to switch leads over the fence.

 What is a Canter?
The footfall sequence in the canter depends on the lead the horse is using, that is, which front foot contacts the ground last in the stride.
It is similar to the second type of four beat canter, with the diagonal hooves coming to the ground separately, but in it, the leading fore is followed by the non-leading hind with no moment of suspension.
A good canter is not defined by slow speed, although it should not be very fast, or by high action in front, although it should not be done "heavy on the forehand" with no lift to the front legs.
