In 1834, Busby convened the United Tribes of New Zealand to select a flag and declare their independence, which led to the Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand.
Conditions vary from wet and cold on the West Coast of the South Island to dry and continental in the Mackenzie Basin of inland Canterbury and almost subtropical in Northland.
Pursuant to this policy, during the late 1980s and early 1990s, the New Zealand Government sold a number of former government owned enterprises including its telecommunications company, railway network, a number of radio stations, and two financial institutions.

 Shackleton news
Alexandra Shackleton, the Society's President, was delighted to announce that the NASA Mars Exploration Rover mission, which is naming the craters explored by the rover Opportunity after ships of exploration, has named a small Martian crater the 'James Caird'.
Members of the society may like to know that in May 2005 the nine survivors of that expedition (of a party of ten) duly celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the 1965 Expedition.
It was erected by the New Zealand Antarctic Society.
