Canterbury Scene: Definition and Links by Encyclopedian.com
The Canterbury Scene (or Canterbury Sound) is a term used to loosely describe the group of progressive rock musicians that were based around the town of Canterbury, Kent, England during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The scene had its roots in the Wilde Flowers[?], a band formed in 1964 which, at various times, was home to the founding musicians of both the Soft Machine[?] and Caravan[?], bands which in turn provided the musicians of several later bands.
The genesis of the Canterbury Sound may, in part, be traced back to 1960, when Australian beatnik Daevid Allen[?] lodged at Robert Wyatt[?]'s parents' guest-house in Lydden[?], ten miles to the south of Canterbury.

Rotters' Club - Le Correnti del Prog: Canterbury
Canterbury is a small town in the English county of Kent, about 90 Kms far from London, famous for its cathedral and for The Canterbury tales by G.
Canterbury is also famous from a musical point of view just because in the 60's it was laid the foundations of a musical genre which, even if for few loving estimators, will be one of the most interesting representatives of the musical "progress" that exploded in the 70s.
Many bands were included in the Canterbury scene because of their musicians or influences in their compositions.

A fraternal collective of musicians clustered around the Kentish tourist town that is home to the Church of England's Archbishop, the Canterbury Scene provided the cradle for a half-dozen of the most freewheeling British bands of the post-psychedelic era.
By the early '70s however, a series of fragmenting lineup changes and the subsequent formation of new bands soon multiplied the force of the Canterbury scene.
By the mid-'70s, many of the remaining Canterbury bands had progressed from psychedelic and prog-rock to embrace extended fusion jams with few lyrics.

Perhaps, once the neuropsychologists have had their say, we should then invite the musicologists along to decide what the "Canterbury scene" really is. Roughly speaking, it refers to a loose network of musicians that evolved out of a band called the Wilde Flowers, active in Canterbury in the mid-1960s.

Although it emerged in the late 1960s concurrent with American counterparts who were also investigating a fusion of jazz with a rock sensibility, the British Canterbury scene has always retained a distinct complexion.
By contrast, many of the Canterbury scene’s leading lights, including Soft Machine’s Hugh Hopper and Mike Ratledge, came from a background in pop and were influenced by contemporary classical composers like the minimalist Terry Riley.
It was this pop sensibility, despite an often idiosyncratic context, that elevated many Canterbury groups to legendary status amongst fans of both progressive rock and fusion.

The link between the classic Canterbury Scene of the '70s and the D.I.Y. psychedelic pop scene of the '90s, Todd Dillingham is a one-of-a-kind artist.
Dillingham's association with Voiceprint, a label associated with the '70s Canterbury Scene spearheaded by the Soft Machine and Hatfield and the North, began in 1991, when Caravan keyboardist Richard Sinclair invited Dillingham to record an album with himself, drummer Andy Ward (Camel), and reedman Jimmy Hastings (Caravan, Soft Machine, National Health).
The resulting Wilde Canterbury Dream received rapturous reviews among prog rock diehards, but Dillingham's next two releases were a pair of more immediately accessible psychedelic pop EPs in the style of XTC's Dukes of Stratosphear side project: the Norwegian release A Dash of Haddock (1993), and the German release Arthur Woodcote (Is His Name) (1994).
