Canterbury Scene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Canterbury Scene (or Canterbury Sound) is a term used to loosely describe the group of progressive rock musicians that were based around the city of Canterbury, Kent, England during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The musicians were not tied by very strong musical similarities, but a certain whimsicalness, touches of psychedelia, rather abstruse lyrics, and a use of improvisation derived from jazz are common elements in their work.
The genesis of the Canterbury Sound may, in part, be traced back to 1960, when Australian beatnik Daevid Allen lodged at Robert Wyatt's parents' guest-house in Lydden, ten miles to the south of Canterbury.

While there are some fusiony bits and pieces, Canterbury style is much closer to the mark, at least because the music has its moments of -like crazed non-harmonies and also because of the almost ish sense of humor (without the drug-induced psychedelic leanings).
Five extended pieces (of which three are purely instrumental) fully allows the various musicians to push the sound to the limits and impress with their virtuosity.

However, in Canterbury there started a group of musicians who would be a big influence on psychedelic music and the long art rock form that hadn't been invented yet.
The Renaissance sound featured poetic lyrics set to a tight rock ensemble that had little or no electric guitar, plus the string arrangements were always well done with real musicians, not faked with mellotrons.
It was a very appealing kind of sound, which could have lent itself to pop music easily but they stuck with a more challenging kind of music and poetic lyrics about things like "Mother Russia" rather than songs about girls and their boyfriends.

In MTSN's sound is noticeable how all it's members put all their eggs in one basket as well as grab all kinds of influences: from super-acid and squeaking Hammond organs to progressive arrangements and metals that evoke the classic Miles Davis 60's sound.
One of the most interesting aspects of the band is the influence of Canterbury sound, especially in tracks like "Trout", where they combine sax melodies in the purest style of Soft Machine and Nucleus with melodies and arrangements in the style of Caravan.
The selection of sounds in the album is delightful, from the most classic Mike Ratledge's Hammond sounds to the dusty mellotrons in "Normal".

Caravan was formed in Canterbury, England in 1968 by Pye Hastings (guitar/ vocals), Dave Sinclair (keyboards), Richard Sinclair (bass/ vocals) and Richard Coughlan (drums).
Not fitting in with the traditional Caravan sound, tensions lead to their departure shortly thereafter, while the rest of the band headed into the studio to record demos for the next album.
The traditional Caravan sound is most present on the title track and "Aristocracy", both of which combine the whimsy and playfulness we've come to know and love along with intense jamming and a softer more melodic side.

Arkham is a collection of Belgium's early best-kept progressive secret; a trio influenced by the sounds of Canterbury and taking its native country by storm before disbanding and having its integrating cells merge with other outfits that would actually manage to release some groundbreaking material; namely Magma and Univers Zéro.
Unlike the work of Univers Zéro and Magma, however, Arkham's compositions have not aged as well, and the heavy spirit of improvisation and jamming that constitutes half of their life force simply meanders off too much by today's standards.
Perhaps the most endearing characteristic of Arkham, and the one that almost certainly conforms the counterattack for sporadic lack of true focus, is youthful vigor.

Ground and Sky review - Supersister - Present From Nancy
Supersister helped to develop the "Canterbury" style of progressive rock, a variety of progressive that existed more or less independently from the movement that King Crimson initiated in 1969 with In the Court of the Crimson King.
I say "develop" instead of "imitate" because although the music of Supersister appears to be influenced by Soft Machine and Caravan (generally considered "founders" of the Canterbury style), I find Supersister remarkable for doing so much to advance the style, especially taking into account the band's lack of physical proximity to the other principals.
Where Supersister appears to go beyond the work of their immediate contemporaries, though, is in the performances and sound of the music itself.

Caravan must be considered THE Canterbury band but unfortunately things were against them and with restricted time and sound problems only had time to put in a five song set (one of which was a medley of a early less well known tracks).
They ended with the classic "Nine Feet Underground' and with apologies to all that because of the time restriction/curfew they had no time to do the traditional 'Golf Girl' encore - a shame but that was the only thing that spoilt a great day (except the beer tent running out at 5pm).

To the extent that R.I.O. remains a living part of the critical vocabulary in 1996, it refers first to a sound and a style that thears pick up quickly and identify easily.
