Cantharellus cibarius can be recognized by the hymenophore which is ridged and blunt-edged, the smooth pileus, and the Clitocyboid stature.
Cantharellus formosus is recognized by the convex shape of the pileus, the pinkish color of the hymenophore and of the basidiospore deposite, and the tendency of the hymenophore to stain brown.
cibarius has an irregular outline, a yellow to orange hymenophore, basidiospores that are yellowish in deposite, and a non-staining hymenophore.

The number of bacteria in the tissue of C. cibarius was 2.4 x 10(6) g-1 F.W. This population size was of the same magnitude as in the soil of its growing site and in Hydnum rufescens, but 100-1000 times greater than in the agarics studied.
Strains were tested with C. cibarius in vitro to study their effect on fungal growth.

Recent DNA work is showing that many species we all thought were Cantharellus, are actually turning out to be Craterellus, the genus that the Horn of Plenty, Craterellus cornucopioides is in.
Previously features such as the presence of clamp connections, a solid stem and carotenoid pigments put species in Cantharellus, but DNA work is showing that Craterellus species can have clamp connections and carotenoid pigments.
Chanterelles contain very high Vitamin D levels with cod liver oil being one of the few better natural sources of Vitamin D. In some studies, Cantharellus cibarius was shown to have lower levels of lead, cadmium and radioactive cesium-137 (in areas affected by Chernobyl) than other edible fungi.

The surveys carried out in the three countries generally showed that, due to lack of knowledge on wild mushroom species, the interest in edible mushrooms is relatively low in both Jordan and Syria.
However, three specific species, Cantharellus cibarius, Boletus aereus and Morcchella esulenta, are very much appreciated by the local populations, although they can only be found for a very short period of the year.
More recent surveys conducted in 1993 for a group of villages located in the Samsun, Erzurum and Sinop provinces showed that Cantharellus Cibarius, Morchella sp., Boletus edulis, Lactarius deliciosum and Russula delica were the species collected more frequently.
