  The Once & Future Harp
The Cantigas da Santa Maria or Canticles of Holy Mary, were collected and beautifully preserved in four manuscripts by King Alfonso X, El Sabio (The Wise) who ruled medieval Spain from 1252 to 1284.
Cantiga 380 is a Cantiga de loor or Cantiga of praise.
Most of the Cantigas tell the stories of the many miracles of Holy Mary, but the Cantigas de loor (every tenth Cantiga in the manuscripts) extol her virtues and encourage everyone to thank and praise her.

The versions of the Cantigas are offered in their entirety with complete lyrics, except those performed instrumentally, something which distinguishes Paniagua and his group from others that don't perform the complete versions.
The voices chosen have personality although at times they are a little blurred by heavy percussion (as is the case of the soprano in cantiga 116), and all serve their function.
In cantiga 116 the obsessive syncopated percussion (Peñaparda's tambourine) when accompanying the hurdy-gurdy, tends to break the balance of the form, as does the vocal tutti.

In the course of doing so, I found Cantiga XV, which I intended to make into a folk-play, like the mummers play we perform regularly.
Translating it for this purpose has proved to be a thorny problem, but I found a lovely set of illustrations that go with Cantiga X, and I have at least (October 2000) got that one to the doggerel stage.
Reflecting this eclecticism, the tales of the Cantigas are drawn from all of these cultures, so, welcome to the world of the Cantigas.

They are preserved in several large and elaborate manuscripts prepared at the royal court; and while it is doubtful that the King composed all of the songs personally, it is clear that he was closely involved, emotionally and materially, in their compilation.
The Arabo-andalusian pieces that serve as preludes and postludes to the Cantigas on this recording were chosen for their intrinsic beauty first of all, but also for their musical kinship with certain Cantigas melodies.
The preparation of these Cantigas has been a large undertaking, as exhilarating and passionate in its human interactions as it has been on the scholarly and musical front.Special thanks are due Erato Disques, Paris, for their courage and foresight in supporting this project.

Called añafil (from the Arabic al-nafir), it is shown in the Cantigas with pennons displaying the lion and castle arms of Leon and Castile, leaving no doubt as to its role as an instrument of power and prestige.
This was derived from the Arabic al-buq, originally a generic word for horns and trumpets, but latterly restricted to horns.
This unlikely instrument seems to have survived, or have been revived, into the 13th century and Cantiga 300 shows a huge one being played, accompanied by an hourglass-shaped drum.

The Holy Mary is credited with healing powers, as in cantiga 37 where she restores an amputated foot and in cantiga 69 where she made a deaf-mute speak, and even with bringing the dead back to life, as in cantigas 21 and 33 where she restores to life a child and a pilgrim.
Some cantigas deal with Her powers in a more circumspect way, like cantiga 29 where Mary made her image appear on the stones, but all of them demonstrate in the end the boundless love that people expected from the Virgin Mary.

Still, the possible instance of a cantiga tune surviving in oral tradition up to the third decade of the present century appears to have given rise to a few casual notices, even though its sung text is a Castilian translation of the original Galician-Portuguese.
