Spring officially arrives in Canton whenever the tulips are in full bloom in South Park.
The Consolidation Coal Company donated the nearly 450 acres of land and water areas to the Park District and the park was then developed by state and federal grants.
The park is a refuge for many waterfowl and wildlife species native to the plains of Illinois.

Canton, an industrial community in southeast Baltimore, is the product of over one hundred years of planned development supervised by the Canton Company, a real estate development firm.
In 1866, the Canton Company initiated one of its major undertakings, the Union Railroad, which was designed to serve as a connector between the Pennsylvania Railroad and the railroad lines from the north and west.

The IRS had originally sought a penalty from the school district that was substantially higher that the estimated $154,000 that the school district will have to expend in resolving the dispute with the IRS, school officials said.
According to the settlement agreement, the IRS has made a "preliminary determination" that the Towanda School District issued $10 million in bonds "prematurely" and that the bonds were issued with the intent to use the proceeds from the bond sale "for an initial period" to acquire higher yielding investments and to retain the earnings.
The school district contends that it issued the bonds in May 1999 with "reasonable expectations" to use the proceeds to pay for its school facilities improvement project within three years.

While in Canton, I only talked to secretaries from several different schools coming from the perspective of a mother interested in sending her child to their school next fall.
The Plymouth-Canton school district appeared to go above and beyond the call of duty, even beyond bilingual education issues, the faculty members seem to be involved with the students on an individual level--not only do language deficits hold students back, but cultural differences do as well, and the staff seem to be aware of this.
Canton is fairly diverse for a township of its size, and I really believe that they are doing their part in assisting students with language barriers.

Former Canton resident, retired Air Force Colonel, and former NASA Astronaut Steve Nagel has secured a shuttle spacecraft tire for display by the Canton Park District the board learned at its Feb. 28 meeting.
Nagel served as mission specialist on STS 51G in June of 1985, served as pilot on STS 61A in October of 1985, served as shuttle commander on STS 37 in April of 1991; and served as shuttle commander on STS 55 in May of 1993.
The park district was notified of the award during the annual State Park and Recreation Conference held in January in Chicago.
