Springfield Township, with its environs, is situated in the southeast corner of Summit County.
In the original Township survey by General Simon Perkins for the Connecticut Land Company in 1806 Springfield was set up as an equalizing township, as were the others in the reserve, and contained twenty-five square miles, five miles on each side.
Springfield Township is unique in the fact that it has been part of three counties; originally part of Trumbull County, it became attached to Portage county and was maintained in this relation until the new county of Summit was established in 1840.

Porter Township is the first local government in the United States to refuse to recognize corporate claims to civil rights and ban corporate involvement in governing.
The township adopted a binding law declaring that corporations operating in the township may not wield legal privileges—historically used by corporations to override democratic decision-making—to stop the township from passing laws which protect residents from toxic sewage sludge.
Porter Township supervisors, upon learning of the ability of corporations to direct the courts to vindicate corporate claims to civil and legal privileges to override local governments, decided to pass a law to eliminate corporate claims to those rights.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has levied a $14,300 fine against Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of Bellefonte, Centre County, for state air quality violations at plants it owns in three counties, DEP Regional Director Robert Yowell announced.
DEP inspections conducted in July 2003 and August 2003 revealed that Hawbaker was not taking appropriate measures to control dust at its sand and gravel processing plant in Canton Township, Bradford County, resulting in air pollution caused by particulate matter.
A September 2003 inspection by DEP at a Hawbaker asphalt plant in Spring Township determined that the company had burned reprocessed oil that contained excessive amounts of halides, resulting in multiple violations of its air quality plan approval previously issued by DEP.

 Railroad Stations of the Tri-Counties - Canton PA
My father, Lester M. Newell, Jr., worked as a freight agent at the railroad station in Canton, Bradford Co., PA in 1954.
Both photos are dated 10 Feb 1893 and the photos show a Northern Central Railroad snowplow being pushed by at least five steam locomotives.
One of the photos was taken looking south; you can see the large snowplow on the lead locomotive and to the right of the locomotive is the passenger station, at Canton.
