1939: Canton And Enderbury Islands - Archive Article - MSN Encarta
Canton and Enderbury Islands, atolls of coral formation, are situated 1,850 miles south of Hawaii in the Phoenix group of Pacific islands at about 2° 50 S. lat.
Canton is about 9 miles long and 50 to 600 yards wide.
The significance of the claims advanced lies in the fact that Canton lagoon provides one of the best seaplane bases in the Pacific and thus forms an important air base and naval communications center on the route to Manila and Australia.

Northwest of Rarotonga and midway between Hawaii and New Zealand, the islands of Canton and Enderbury were claimed by the United States but administered jointly with the United Kingdom under a 50 year treaty signed in 1939.
The rich guano deposits on Enderbury Island attracted American interests in the 1850s, but the British were also interested in the area, and colonial control was disputed with the United States.
During this period, and prior to Canton Island becoming part of Kiribati, the island made its contribution to the history of radio in the Pacific.
