  Definition of Cantopop
Cantopop draws influence not only from other forms of Chinese music, but from a variety of international styles, including: jazz, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, electronic music, Western pop music, and others.
Cantopop stars such as Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, Alan Tam, Priscilla Chan and Danny Chan quickly became household names in the then British colony in the late 1980s with exciting talents such as Beyond, Jacky Cheung and Andy Lau soon to emerge as firm contenders in the early 1990s.
Nonetheless, the Cantopop era has been given a new lease of life with the introduction of the nonsensical and contentious 'New Four Heavenly Kings' under the approval of veteran singer Alan Tam and they are Hacken Lee, Andy Hui, Leo Ku and Edmond Leung with the primary aim of resuscitating the ailing industry.

 Hong Kong Pop Industry
Cantonese Pop (or Cantopop for short) had its influences from the West, and the music is usually a hybrid of local and international pop material, but it is the feel good taste of the saccharine ballads that dominates the market.
That is why Cantopop is created, packaged and marketed to an eager audience, whose obsession with their pretty idols (many of whom are talentless) is seen as an unlimited goldmine for producers and music companies.
The success of Cantopop could be seen as an inexplicable phenomenon, but insiders know that it is due to the fact that marketing of Cantopop has been honed to an exact science, a brilliant strategy that has made this industry increasingly profitable.

The women of 1980s Cantopop were no slouches, either — Anita Mui Yim-Fong, sometimes hailed as the ‘Madonna of the East’ came onto the scene and gave Cantopop fans a bolder representation of her female strength and creativity.
Although the crown of Cantopop Queen was firmly on top of her head, Anita Mui had competition; 1984 saw the rise of two new female faces - Sally Yeh and Priscilla Chan - both proving capable of winning the hearts of Cantopop fans everywhere.
Young and fresh, Priscilla Chan took to the Cantopop stage with her 1984 song "A Dying Promise." After two albums that were also mostly ballads, Priscilla struck out with a fast number, called "Dancing Street," which became one of the most popular dance songs of the year.
