The mine was estimated to have four years of ore reserves and had contracted to supply its tungsten to Swedish and US companies.
The CanTung Mine was open from 1962 to 1986, and was sold to Aur Resources, then resold to North American Tungsten (NATCL) in 1997.

The Cantung mine remains in full swing today after satisfying authorities that the operation is within its licence obligations, says the president of North American Tungsten.
He also mentioned a circulation system has been installed to capture what he described as a small amount of water that was flowing from the mine and mixing with natural runoff but was not running through the treatment ponds.
While the level of the number three pond is near its upper limit outlined in the water licence, it is still within the licenced level, he said.

Mine staff are reviewing additional pillars and other smaller bodies of mineralization that are not included in reserves to determine if they can be mined economically.

The CanTung Tungsten deposit was originally discovered in 1954 by Axel Berglund while prospecting for copper.
CanTung initially operated as an open pit mine between 1962 and 1973, although it was closed temporarily during 1963 due to low tungsten prices.
At one point, CanTung and nearby MacTung were calculated to contain 15% of the world's supply of Tungsten, one of the world's hardest metals.
