		Archaeologists suggest that when the Romans came to Canvey and created its red hills it was perhaps still part of the mainland, but through the slow sinking of the land and rising of sea levels had become no less than five separate islands by Anglo-Saxon times.
		In this lively book, the island's entire past is reviewed, from Roman salt-pans to the new sea wall and brought vividly to life in a profusion of remarkable old photographs.
		He has lived all his life on Canvey and is a well known local figure, both for his efforts in charity work in the community, for which he has won a National Caring Award, and as the publisher of a long established local newspaper.

	Canvey Island's History in Words and Pictures
		Canvey Island is not mentioned in the Doomsday Book, although much stress is laid upon the coastal marshes south of Essex, which are estimated to have provided grazing for 18,000 sheep.
		Landholdings on the island gradually changed hands, and in the reign of Edward II the acquisition of land by John de Apeton (thought to be an ancestor of Sir Roger Appleton) occurred.
		It was this that led the landowners to petition Parliament in 1792 with an act for 'effectively embanking, draining and otherwise improving the Island of Canvey in the County of Essex'.
