Caodong - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Caodong (Chinese 曹洞宗) is a Chinese Zen Buddhist sect founded by Dongshan Liangjie and his Dharma-heirs in the 9th century.
Some attribute the name "Caodong" as a union of "Dongshan" and "Caoshan" from one of his Dharma-heirs, Caoshan Benji; however, the "Cao" much more likely came from "Caoxi", the "mountain-name" of Huineng, the Sixth Ancestor of Chan, as Caoshan was of little importance unlike his contemporary and fellow Dharma-heir, Yunju Daoying.
In 1227 Dogen Zenji took Caodong to Japan as the Soto sect, where it became very popular.

The traditional five houses were Caodong (曹洞宗), Linji (臨濟宗), Guiyang (潙仰宗), Fayan (法眼宗), and Yunmen (雲闀宗).
The teaching styles and words of the classical masters were collected in such important Zen texts as the Blue Cliff Record (1125) of Yuanwu and The Gateless Gate (1228) of Wumen, recording classic koan cases which would be studied by later generations of students down to the present.
Another Chinese Zen teacher with a Western following is Sheng-yen, a master trained in both the Caodong and Linji schools (equivalent to the Japanese Soto and Rinzai, respectively).

The Linji line was also tranmitted to Japan where it became known as the Rinzai line.

 Dharma Dictionary - Huihu
This text, known in Japanese as the Sandokai, is an indispensable part of the canon of Soto Zen, and is recited in Soto temples daily.
The Caodong sect’s use of huihu, as taught by Chan masters still to this day, is most interesting when it is used to describe the experiences one encounters in practicing meditation.
The great Caodong master Hongzhi, who first articulated the method of silent illumination, said, “When the seeing [of self-nature] is complete, huihu rests.” That is cessation, ultimate liberation, beyond the most blissful event we could hope to attain.
