The water source for Caol Ila is the peaty Loch Nam Ban about a mile away from which the water flows through fields, arriving at a waterfall near the distillery.

Caol Ila was silent until 1937 and had to close down during part of WWII as well.
After WWII things proceeded relatively uneventful at Caol Ila for a few decades before it was rebuilt and extended from two to six stills between 1972 and 1974.
The name Caol Ila (pronounced as 'kul-eela' and easily misspelled as Coal Ila) is Gaelic for 'Sound of Islay' and is probably inspired by the location of the distillery along the stretch of water between Islay and Jura.

Matured in first fill sherry butts (#12423 and 12424) this whisky was distilled on 30.9.94 and bottled on 2.12.2005.
