Topic: Capability computers

In the News (Thu 31 Dec 09)

Capability-based security - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A capability is defined to be an object which, by virtue of its possession by a user process, grants that process the capability (hence the name) to interact with an object in certain ways.
In a capability-based system, the capabilities themselves are passed between processes and storage using a mechanism that is known by the operating system to maintain the integrity of those capabilities.

With increased computer capabilities he says no wonder people believe the fantastic claims about computers and the myth that computers are capable of human-like thought.
Computers are programmed to solve problems by following rules but Murphy (2000) says that the rules must reflect the common sense of the decision-makers.
It is also important that computers are not just used for the sake of using them and that the benefits of using computers are justified through research.

 General Accounting Office Report
Indeed, with the rapid changes in computer architectures and the growth of what is called "distributed" computing, new approaches may be necessary to protect the national security interests in limiting potential adversaries' use of such machines in their research and development programs and their deployed weapon systems.
While these computers currently require a license for export to military end-users in tier 3 countries, they would not be controlled under newly revised controls announced by the President on February 1 of this year.
The President's July 1999 report justifying changes to the control levels for computers did report that computers at all computing levels are important from the lowest performance levels to the highest.

Monitors that have the capability to automatically proceed from active mode to a low-power mode of 8 Watts or less are assumed to comply.
If the computer is shipped with the capability to be on a network, it shall retain in sleep mode its ability to respond to wake events directed or targeted to the computer while on a network.

 Introduction
Reading the news media, one would conclude that all our computer systems are horrifically vulnerable to computer hackers (or, more correctly, to computer crackers, the kind of hacker that turns his skills to evil purposes).
The technology for defeating computer crackers was actually developed decades ago, by men and women of great insight working with mainframe computers.
Capability security is today being resurrected in several places in several ways, notably in the form of the E programming language and the EROS operating system.

 What is a Capability, Anyway?
In both capability and ACL systems, the second problem can be solved by creating a new login for the same user and selectively copying into the new account those personal documents that the user should retain access to.
In capability systems, another solution is possible: build a software-enforced special compartment that prevents the documents from being copied out of the compartment, and only let the user access those documents inside the compartment.
In fact, computer software vendors have taken steps to ensure that they are not held liable for the flaws in their software, even when they are real, demonstrable, and incontrovertable.

From Computing with Numbers to Computing with Words to Computation with Perceptions--A Paradigm Shift Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh Abstract One of the most deep-seated traditions in science has been and continues to Be that of according more respect to numbers than to words.
What Lord Kelvin did not foresee is the advent of the computer age and the ballistic ascent in the capability of computers to process huge volumes of information at high speed, low cost, and high reliability.
To be able to compute with perceptions it is necessary to have a means of representing their meaning in a way that lends itself to computation.

For computer exports to military end-users in China, US companies must apply for an IVL for computers with a capability of 12,500 MTOPS; this was changed from a level of 6,500 MTOPS set in 1999.
In addition to the unresolved Silicon Graphics case, a 2,700 MTOP Sun Microsystems computer was determined to have been diverted to a military and scientific research institute in Changsha, Hunan Province called the Changsha Institute of Science and Technology or the University of Science and Technology for National Defense.
Computers which may not be among the 500 fastest but still can perform military applications may not be able to be controlled, bringing into question the efficacy of supercomputer export controls.

The remarkable expansion in the capability of computers and other electronic devices over the last few decades has been enabled by microminiaturization more than any other single factor.
The new capabilities expected from working at nanoscale are not just the result of orders-of-magnitude size reduction but of the possibility of discovering and utilizing genuinely new phenomena that appear only at the atomic level.
The possibility of quantum computers is being investigated, for example—not a little box of interconnected nanoengineered circuit structures, but a beaker of liquid whose atomic particles are manipulated by nuclear magnetic resonance to control the "ones" and "zeros" of their nuclear spin.
