Fans of Capcom and SNK have long dreamed of a team up battle between the two companies’ teams, and at long last, the battle of the Millenium has arrived in the form of Capcom Vs. SNK for the Sega Dreamcast.
SNK vs. Capcom implements each of their distinct fighting styles (“grooves”) by allowing players to figure out which mode they want to use.
Capcom Groove is similar to the Alpha series, where the characters have a Combo gauge that works by allowing players to perform three levels of hyper combos.

Capcom on the other hand only touched up choice characters, adding mostly to their favorites, Ryu and Ken. They seemed to almost completely ignore Sakura and Cammy who were almost total sprite rips from their previous CPS2 titles.
Capcom groove allows you to use the 3 level super meter from the Street Fighter Alpha series whereas the SNK groove allows you to charge up your super by holding down the two fierce buttons.
Capcom vs. SNK may not have as an impressive roster or flashy supers but it does bring together the two worlds we thought would never collide.

The button and directional pad schemes for pulling off the moves in Capcom vs. SNK are much the same as the moves for Street Fighter, as opposed to King of Fighters, with a lot of charging back and semi, quarter, and three quarter stick movements.
While Capcom vs SNK is a 2D game there have been some pretty 3D effects thrown into the mix to spice things up some, with dazzling energy attacks.

Even though SNK had to delay their release of the Capcom vs. SNK games due to financial trouble (the result of ill fated consoles like NEO-GEO Pocket and the NEO-GEO 64), Capcom released two installments of this franchise.
Capcom vs. SNK 2 only has a few secret characters as extras and they are cheap lame excuses like “Evil Ryu” and “Super Akuma." This kind of secret character is unforgivable when you have an agreement licensing literally hundreds of fighting characters and still have plenty of good characters not included in the game.

While Capcom has been severely criticized for including the GC-ism as an alternative to the regular arcade controls (entitled AC-ism), GC-ism is strictly for beginners as a means to familiarize oneself with the game and characters’ moves.
Capcom really should have taken more time in smoothing some animations for the fighters, and perhaps even gone through with a major overhaul, bringing all the sprites into high resolution.
I did own the first Capcom Vs SNK on the Dreamcast and so I was skeptical as to how different this game could possibly be.

Even if I hadn't played an SNK game since Fatal Fury and half of their cast would be new to me, this was still a fairly monumental game, that quite naturally didn't get advertised or promoted in any way, such is the fate of the 2D game these days.
Capcom, in all their infinite wisdom, decided to assign every character in the game a 'Ratio' from 1-4, depending on how they rate their power.
Capcom opted to go for a more SNK styled control method for the game, with only 4 attack buttons, Light and Fierce Punch and the respective strengths of kick.

Capcom’s meter was that of the super level bar seen from the alpha series, while SNK’s super bar acts was the ‘extra’ blue bar that was in KOF 94-98.
Capcom’s first attempt of this collaboration on their turf did have a few duds, but through it all, this was a decent try.

SNK's inimitable 2D art style still has its charm, however, favouring a slightly more realistic slant on character design and a palette that seems positively muted compare to Capcom's brighter and brasher approach.
It would have been rewarding if, as in the case of Capcom vs. SNK 2, the backdrops were populated by characters who didn't make the playable cut, but instead we have largely non-descript areas whose only point of real interest are the badly-translated names.

Speaking of deep, Capcom vs. SNK EO is not lacking in that area.

I am sorry to say that Capcom vs SNK is by no means a great game, and is in fact one of the most uninspired fighters ever made.
The Capcom characters are jagged and jumpy, and a step down from Capcom's other recent 2-D animations.
Capcom's never-ending variations on a theme have made them a leader over the past 10 years, but if they don't bring in a bigger burst of new blood soon, it's going to be their end.
