  New Zealand Lighthouses
Cape Maria van Diemen, facing the Tasman Sea, is the westernmost of the three points of land at the northern end of New Zealand, the other two being Cape Reinga and North Cape.
The lighthouse was prefabricated in Pimlico, England, and is a twin of the Cape Egmont Light.
In 2001 the official Cape Jackson Light was moved to a modern tower at the tip of the peninsula, but the old lighthouse also remains in service.

A fairytale figure with a wizard-like beard is the last keeper of the Cape Egmont Lighthouse.
This was conveyed in a letter to the Marine Department in Wellington written by Cape Egmont's principal keeper, Mr Simpson.

All the south side of the Island is in sight of the continent; the distance between Cape Traverse on the Island, and Cape Tourmentin in New Brunswick, is only ten miles, and between Carribou Point in Nova Scotia and the opposite part of the Island, about twelve miles.
The North Cape of the Island, is one hundred miles due south of Cape Rosier, at the entrance of the river St. Lawrence.
From Cape Traverse to St. Peter's Island there is a shoal which is not accurately laid down in any chart yet published; large vessels should not approach that part of the coast nearer than two miles.

 Mount Taranaki National Park
The mountain was named Egmont by James Cook, when he first sighted it in January 1770, after the second Earl of Egmont, a former First Lord of the Admiralty.
Cape Egmont is the most westerly point on the Taranaki coastline, originally named 'Cabo Pieter Boreels' by Abel Tasman who spotted the cape in December 1642.
Egmont Village, near Inglewood, and Egmont Road, a railway station north-east of New Plymouth, have also taken the name.

In this vicinity of between North Cape and Cape Maria van Diemen in New Zealand’s weatern far north great concentrations of juveniles have been found.
In saying all this studies of the packhorse crayfish by scientist John Booth of Fisheries Research indicate that long distance movements do occur, and it is possible that this species walks the entire length of New Zealand’s west coast.
Most were around Cape Reinga, but four crayfish had moved south to the Cape Egmont area, a distance of 514 kilometres (319mls).

The evening was young and we had plenty of light left and Phil decided he wanted to find Cape Tryon and New London lights.
It was beautiful, the western sky was in the final stages of dusk and the ocean glistened.

Pogo New Zealand has been granted a 119 sq km extension to the south of its offshore Taranaki permit PEP 38490 adjoining the north-eastern edge of the Maui gas field.
The original 359 sq km permit, which also borders the Taranaki coast south of Cape Egmont, was issued to the Houston-based parent company Pogo Producing Company in the Taranaki permitting round in February this year.
Pogo is required in the amended work permit to reprocess and interpret almost 700 km of 2D seismic data including 177 km of 2D seismic in the new extension.

As folks who have visited other areas of my site know, I enjoy photographing lighthouses.
This one occupies the westernmost tip of Cape Egmont.
The coastline here is very rugged, it was very windy, to the point of it being difficult to even stand up at times, and hence the necessity of warning ships of impending doom.
