What's puzzling about "Cape Fear," though, is why, at this stage of his career, Scorsese would set his sights so low.
But "Cape Fear" is far from Scorsese at his best; in fact, it's our mostinteresting filmmaker's least interesting work.
In remaking the effective but minor 1962 thriller, the filmmakers have improved on the original, but the original is still there, at least in skeletal form, and they haven't managed to transcend its limitations.

But this boldly imagined film is also Scorsese's first remake, which raises the question "Why Cape Fear?" Director J. Lee Thompson's 1962 film worked just fine, as did Robert Mitchum as Max Cady, the ex-con who takes revenge on a lawyer (Gregory Peck) by scaring his wife (Polly Bergen) and daughter (Lori Martin).
In the first Cape Fear, Cady was the only walking time bomb; in the Scorsese version, everyone is ticking.
In the 1962 version, Cady first showed his sinister hand by spying on the Bowdens at a bowling alley.

DVD Verdict Review - Cape Fear (1962)
The success of the 1962 version is entirely due to three things—an extraordinary performance by Robert Mitchum, the direction of J. Lee Thompson, and James Webb's script that builds the tension gradually but continuously and realistically to a final climactic confrontation.
Accordingly, he offered the Cape Fear job to Thompson, after Thompson had had an opportunity to read the book on which it was based and had indicated an interest in being involved.
Thompson creates suspense and fear by focusing on the actors' physical and facial reactions to situations, by using light and shadow effectively, and by using the technique of first appearing to defuse a tense situation by providing an innocent explanation, only to suddenly turn up the screws by suddenly returning to the originally expected explanation.

 Cape Fear (1962/1991)
The original Cape Fear is an effective fl and white thriller with a chilling score by the great Bernard Herrmann and an outstanding performance from Robert Mitchum, one of the few Hollywood stars of the time who would have consented to being cast as a vicious rapist who even preys upon Bowden’s teenage daughter.
Scorcese’s Cape Fear conveys the unbalanced state of Cady’s mind by photographing him at wildly off-balanced angles, all of which conspire with DeNiro’s performance to make Cady a genuine monster, one of almost inhuman strength and resilience.
Perhaps Cape Fear was Scorcese’s way of thanking the studio for their support, and also a way to strengthen his own box-office power.

Cape Fear is much more than a high profile remake, because in this case the director happens to be Martin Scorsese, who can pretty much take any movie in history, re-create it and make it his own.
The 1962 thriller was a film Scorsese had always cherished as a classic B movie, in which the moral standards of the characters were set and very well illustrated.
The result is a masterfully crafted movie extravaganza, with a wonderful visual style, and a pure sense of terror, and for my money, remains to this day as one of the best thrillers of the last decade.

Cape Fear (1962) (Review by David Litton)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
The 1962 version of "Cape Fear" is a classic horror movie in every sense of the word, with its high-pitched, screaming soundtrack, its acting, and the story that strays away from the violence seen in today's movies, but still takes a daring step for its time.
Bowden soon realizes that the only avenue of protection for his family is to set a trap for Cady, prove that he is out to harm his wife and child, and have him either arrested or killed on the spot.
It's interesting to watch thrillers from this day and age, and compare it to the tactics used in such movies as "Cape Fear." In a society where we resort to such violent and gruesome tactics in movies, sometimes it's nice to escape that and find something out of the norm.

With this narrative, Cape Fear, based on John D. MacDonald's pulp thriller The Executioners, is simply a lewd and sensational thriller no different in concept from the thousands of half-assed B-movies shown after 10 p.m.
The overriding theme of this 1962 adaptation is Bowden's paralysis when caught between the law he exhorts and its failure to protect his family.
Technically, the 1962 Cape Fear is an excellent accomplishment, full of vivid chiaroscuro lighting, superbly planned scenarios of sublimated tensions (including the super-taboo threat of sexual assault on a child), and a few eye-catching visual tricks.
