Topic: Cape Fear (1991 film)

  'Cape Fear'
What's puzzling about "Cape Fear," though, is why, at this stage of his career, Scorsese would set his sights so low.
But "Cape Fear" is far from Scorsese at his best; in fact, it's our mostinteresting filmmaker's least interesting work.
At its heart, "Cape Fear" is a genre exercise, and because it's so expertly executed and so visually alive, the movie still gets to us.

  Reference.com/Encyclopedia/Cape Fear (1991 film)
Cape Fear is a 1991 film, directed by Martin Scorsese.
It is a remake of the 1962 film of the same name and tells the story of a family man, a former public defender, whose family is threatened by a convicted rapist who wants vengeance for having been imprisoned for 14 years because of the lawyer's purposeful faulty defense tactics, prejudicing the accused.
The film was adapted by Wesley Strick from the original screenplay by James R. Webb, which was an adaptation from the novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald.

 About Puretch
In 1991 I obtained a roll of pink colored PCB photopolymer and began experimenting with this film.
The thicker of the two films had to be pre-thinned with the developer, an extra step I found to be a hinderance.
This timely step exposes the raw film to oxygen during thinning and drying, degrading the sensitivity of the resist, and yielding inconsistent results.

CAPE FEAR (1991 (COLLECTOR'S EDITION (WIDESCREEN))) + THE AGE OF INNOCENCE - DVDs
For Scorsese, the film represents as drastic a departure from his New York milieu as Kundun's Tibetan setting later would, but the Scorsese program, unlike that of Woody Allen, transcends the city--it's the public's misperception that it doesn't.
Cape Fear is a southern gothic populated by uniquely Scorsesian archetypes who still very much belong to their surroundings.
Late in the film, there is a painfully obvious scratch in the print that remains on screen for the duration of a voice-over passage.

 Cold Mountain (2003)
I don't count on anything anymore except the hope that you will return, and the silent fear that in the years since we saw each other, this war, this awful war, will have changed us both beyond all reckoning.
The film lurches forward with the all-important reunion moment dangling in front of the viewers like a carrot on a stick.
It is solely due to the acting talent and intense chemistry of the stars and not the sketchy, spotty script that this moment carries any dramatic weight at all.

 Cape Fear (1991)
You've pretty much read it in my comments, I am a huge fan of M.S. and R.D. But honestly, I watched "Cape Fear" because I bought "The Simpsons" 5th season on DVD, and I had no idea that the Sideshow Bob episode where he tries to kill Bart was based on this movie.
Even though in some ways this film is done a little over the top, it all adds together very well.
I was very impressed with this film and would recommend it to Martin Scorsesse fans of course.

Film Noir - Kolossal a confronto
