Cape Fear is a prominent headland on the Atlantic coast of North Carolina in the southeastern United States.
It is largely formed of barrier beaches and the silty outwash of the Cape Fear River as it drains the southeast coast of North Carolina through an estuary south of Wilmington.
The cape is the southernmost point of the state of North Carolina, formed where two sweeping arcs of shifting low-lying beach intersect, the result of longshore currents which also form the treacherous, shifting Frying Pan Shoals, part of the ship graveyard of the Atlantic.

The Cape Fear is about 200 feet wide and was not very deep because we have not had rain for a long time.

Cape Fear, called Cape San Romano by the Spanish, appears on the Mercator-Hondius map of 1606 as "C of faire," and on the John Smith map of 1624 as "C:Feare." The 1651 John Farrer map shows "Cape Feare" with an Indian Fort near the mouth of the river and the word "Secotan" near it.
Further settlement was not attempted for fifty years because of the closing of the Carolina land-office by the Lords Proprietors, the hostility of the Cape Fear Indians and the presence of pirates.
Maurice Moore founded Brunswick Town on his grant on the west bank of the river and by June 1726, a map of the town was filed with the Secretary of the Province.

The Cape Fear River Trail begins at the J. Bayard Clark Park in Fayetteville and stretches through the coastal plain of North Carolina to the coastal area of Southport, the terminus of the trail.
The lower portions of the river, from Wilmington to Southport are strongly influenced by tides.
The river is very wide along this section, providing ample room to avoid these large ships and other commercial and recreational boats that use the river, however caution should be exercised while paddling.

We propose to use the sub-watersheds of the three Lock and Dam structures in Cape Fear river to estimate the nutrient (Phosphorus and nitrogen) retention capacity of river bank and adjoining wetland sediments.
For instance, results from a USDA funded study at the Barra Farms Cape Fear Regional Mitigation Bank, reveal particulate bound phosphorus from agricultural land may be an important form of input to the Cape Fear River (Neal Flanagan, personal communication).
The trend of water quality degradation and the emphasis on developing a long-term feasible water quality management practice in the Cape Fear River basin underscores the need for such sediment oriented study, that addresses the role of sediments as nutrient sinks while visualizing the various forms in which nutrients are loaded in the system.
