The Cape in the city name was a rock promontory overlooking the Mississippi River, later destroyed by railroad construction.
The town of Cape Girardeau was incorporated in 1808, prior to Missouri statehood, and was reincorporated as a city in 1843.

The man credited with founding Cape Girardeau, Louis Lorimier, came to the area in 1793, commissioned by the Spanish Governor General to establish a military post from which to trade and interact with the Indians.
With the arrival of the steamboat in 1835, Cape Girardeau became a river boom town, the busiest port between St. Louis and Memphis.
During the war, Cape Girardeau was occupied by Union forces who built four forts to protect the city and river.

Cape Girardeau County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri.
The Cape in the county name was a rock promontory overlooking the Mississippi River, named after Ensign Sieur Jean Baptiste de Girardot (also spelled Girardeau or Girardat).
Girardeau built a trading post at this location in about 1733; he was a soldier stationed at Kaskaskia 1704-1720.

Among those submitting proposals for the court's consideration were Jerome Legg, architect of the nearby Mississippi County courthouse and the 1885 remodeled Cape Girardeau Court of Common Pleas; J. Blackwood from Cape Girardeau; and Robert Kirsch, architect of recent Adair, Carroll, Polk and Vernon counties' courthouses.
The plan he presented Cape Girardeau County was not specifically designed for Jackson, so he adapted it to suit the local situation.
