Cape Griffon numbers have been declining markedly since the beginning of this century, with the present population estimated at around 10,000 birds.
Without the calcium from this bone the young suffer from severe rickets and the result is brittle bones which break during the preparation for their flight.
The Cape Griffon is easily confused with the Asian White-backed Vulture as both are very similar and their territory overlaps somewhat, but of the two species, the Cape Griffon is the slightly larger.

 Refining our vulture culture
The highest-flying bird on record is a species of vulture called the Rüppell's Griffon, once spotted at an altitude of 11,700 metres in the skies of West Africa during the 1960s.
These griffon vultures are very closely related to each other and interbreeding between Rüppell's Griffon and the Cape Griffon has been recorded in South Africa.
Although this is genetically unsubstantiated it allows for the belief that the griffon vultures are barely yet a species, and may only be remnant representatives of a super-species that once inhabited the Palaearctic region of the world.

This popular reserve comprises of four distinct habitats: the Potberg, breeding place of the rare Cape Griffon (Vulture), the coastal fynbos, the Hoop Vlei, a landlocked brackish expanse of water in the heart of the reserve and, last, there is the coastline of alternating rocky outcrops and sandy beaches.
Cape Gannet, African (Black) Oystercatcher, Damara Tern, Hartlaub's Gull, Chestnut‑banded Sandplover and Dune Lark are some of the specialities that frequent this area.
Cape Town has not been getting much good press lately, largely because of the high level of street crime, especially in the downtown area, but we did not notice anything when we made a stroll in the city.

The Waterberg colony of Cape Griffon Vultures, on the cliffs of the Waterberg Plateau Park in the Otjiwarongo district is the last remaining colony in Namibia.
Indigenous thorny species of small trees make it hard for the Cape Griffon to spot carcasses and once they do, they have a hard time taking off with a full crop of food because of their high wing loading (heavy body versus wingspan).
Most of the Cape Griffon's foraging area is on private farmlands where they are vulnerable to poisoned carcasses and mass electrocutions at power lines.

It is quite understandable as the little antelope occur in fairly cold climates such as the Drakensberg at altitudes of over 3,400 meters whereas their range in the Western Cape may include very hot summers and bitterly cold, snowy winters.
It would charge down the length of the cliffs and suddenly turn in to mob the Cape Griffons.
A couple of the vultures took exception to this silly behaviour and protested loudly with the raucous voices.

 Rare vultures get a wing up
BETWEEN 15 and 30 Cape Griffon vultures from South Africa are to be introduced into Namibia shortly to help swell the population of the endangered species.
REST director and founder Maria Diekmann said that about 50 years ago there were an estimated 500 Cape Griffon vultures in the Waterberg Plateau Park area.
The decline in their numbers is a direct result of the vultures eating poisoned carcasses put out by farmers to destroy predators like jackal, caracal and leopard.

Many know of the work Maria Diekmann is doing to save the last remaining Cape Griffon vultures in Namibia from extinction, mainly at the Waterberg Plateau Park.
Only when the education of both communal and commercial farmers is achieved, can the possibility of introducing Cape Griffons from other colonies in South Africa be explored, in the hope that once again a viable breeding population can be established.

 Satellite Tracking
A long awaited milestone was attained recently when REST personnel initiated a program to track specific Cape Griffon Vultures using satellite telemetry data.
At 3:15 the first adult male Cape Griffon vulture Gyps coprotheres, entered the Commercial Bank of Namibia capture aviary and started to feed.
None of the Cape Griffons were the one we had captured, but one of the females was very nervous, and I suspect that she was the female who had observed the capture operation.

B007 Mannyelanong Hill Cape Griffon Vulture Colony (GPS co-ordinates 25.05 S, 25.45 E) Mannyelanong Hill lies by the village of Otse, nearly 50 km south of Gaborone on the Lobatse road.
The kopi itself is a sandstone hill with a cliff face on the southern side.
It is the one of the only two localities currently regularly used by Cape Griffon Vulture in Botswana.
