Cape Henlopen first showed up on european maps in 1544 when Spanish explorers sailed around the cape into Delaware Bay, but it wouldn't be until the mid 17th century that Dutch settlers would arrive to look for permanent settlements.
Cape Henlopen had a fascinating military history, starting with a small fort built by the Dutch in the late 17th century.
Cape Henlopen State Park reminds me quite a bit of Assateague Island State Park on the Maryland end of that barrier island, but Cape Henlopen may be just a little bit less crowded.

Cape Henlopen's strategic location at the mouth of the Delaware Bay led the United States Army to establish Fort Miles among the dunes in 1941.
In 1964, the Department of Defense declared 543 acres on the cape as surplus property and the State of Delaware established Cape Henlopen State Park.
One good way to explore the beach areas at Cape Henlopen is on the 1.8-mile Beach Loop Trail which begins opposite the parking lot in the southernmost section of the park and leads to overlooks of Gordon's Pond Wildlife Area, a unique saltwater impoundment.

Fenwick Island state park is particularly nice and Bethany Beach is a very family oriented town with a tiny boardwalk.
Cape Henlopen State Park is a wonderful campground that we have stayed at numerous times.
The state park at Cape Henlopen is definitely the place to camp, but as the others indicated, it can be tough to get a spot in the summer.

In 1682 William Penn declared that Cape Henlopen would be for, "the usage of the citizens of Lewes and Sussex County," making it one of the first public lands established in the United States.
Attached to the mainland Cape Henlopen is a combination of pitch pine and hardwood forest, salt marshes, salt ponds, 4 miles of beach, and vast expanses of sand dunes, some rising almost 100 feet high.
In April the piping plover nests along the dunes of Cape Henlopen and sections of the park are closed to protect this endangered species.

There's a scandalous story in Henlopen Park: wild rumors of beasts who come out when it's dark on Gordon's Pond Isle to play and cavort when the moon is full and the nights are short.
Cape Henlopen Devils are really quite fierce with unicorn horns which can easily pierce the modest defenses of regular folk who visit the park.

Cape Henlopen State Park's controversial Junction and Breakwater Trail was officially opened Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003.
John Carney, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary John Hughes, and State Parks Director Charles Salkin at the trail head off Wolfe Neck Road, the 3.6-mile trail was inaugurated by cyclists led by Hughes and Carney.
There are restrooms and a parking lot with spaces for 52 cars and four buses at the trail head.

Cape Henlopen is a wonderful spot for either a day visit of beach and nature or for a longer camping experience with biking and fishing and walking thrown in.
Situated around the World War II observation fort (Ft. Miles), the park allows for some wonderful ocean beach access, at the same time that it provides for other ways to enjoy and learn from the beach and ocean environs.
Bicycling: There is a bike path along the road taking you in to the park itself, and then there are bike paths through the park (and good roads where there are not) that let you access most of what the park has to offer.

In the report [prepared by scientists with the Delaware Natural Heritage], eight rare animal species are described, including nesting and migratory birds for which all sides of Gordon's Pond are critical.

The Junction and Breakwater Trail was officially opened Dec. 4, 2003 during a ribbon cutting at the trail head off Wolfe Neck Road on the southwestern side of Cape Henlopen State Park midway between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach.
Extending the trail to Lewes to the north and Rehoboth to the south is the next phase of the project and state officials are working with developers, property owners and the two communities to begin the project.
