Cape May claims to be the oldest seaside resort in the United States (The city's official motto is "The Nation's Oldest Seashore Resort"); it first became popular in the 18th century and was considered one of the finest resorts in America by the 19th century.
New Jersey's Second Congressional District, covering all of Atlantic County, Cape May County, Cumberland County and Salem County and portions of Burlington County and Gloucester County, is represented by Frank LoBiondo (R, Vineland).

Cape Island Creek and marshes separated the island from the rest of the county in the 1600s but gradually the creek filled in and it was Cape Island in name only until 1869 when it officially became the City of Cape May.

The Cape May Lighthouse was built in 1859, and is the third known lighthouse to be built at Cape May Point.
