CMSL could not reach Cape May because the swing bridge over the intracoastal waterway had been damaged in a tug accident.

The Cape May Seashore Line runs between Cape May City at the southern end of the New Jersey Cape, and the 4-H Fairgrounds approximately 15 miles north up towards Vineland NJ.
The photos included here were taken at the 4-H Fairgrounds station as southbound train 301 (10am depart, to Cape May City) prepared to depart on a bright Saturday morning.
I visited the line on the 9th of November 2002, when M-407 was running the normal weekend services.

On the Cape May lines, the trains were in sight of each other for 11 miles between Cape May Court House and Cape May. Over the last 5 miles into Cape May, the tracks were only 50 feet apart.
In 1976, the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines, along with several other small railroads of South Jersey, were engulfed by the formation of the Consolodated Rail Corporation, commonly known as Conrail, due to bulk bankruptsy.
Freight service on the Cape May Branch was not far behind, as the last freight train ran to Cape May Point on July 31st, 1983 to pick up the final string of cars from the Northwest Magnesite Plant in Cape May Point.

Horse-drawn carriage paths became dirt roads between the "Landing" and the famous resort of Cape May. A steam-powered rail trolley was built for faster, more consistent transit to and from town.
The Hudson River Day Line company offered in 1955 to privately operate a public ferry service between Cape May and Lewes under contract with the NJ Highway Commission, but that project died as well.
As the SS Cape May turned in Lewes Harbor to approach the dock, the captain was forced to maneuver the vessel around dredge lines and underwater wires.

The folks at CMSL have moved their web site to a new address and are currently updating the site.
In May, 1996 passenger rail service returned to Cape May County when the Cape May Seashore Lines (CMSL) began operating along the tracks many of you may remember from the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines (P-RSL) right of way.
Right now, the railroad runs between the rail and bus terminal in Cape May and the Cape May County 4-H Fairgrounds - adjacent to the County Park and Zoo (in the town of Cape May Court House).

Tony always had a dream of restoring rail service to the Cape, and despite may setbacks and miles of red tape, his dream was realized on December 18, 1998.

The trouble was that the swing bridge to Cape May City needed to be refurbished and it was found that the computer electronics used to index the bridge needed replacing.
The CMSL is a great way to go from Cape May City to the Cold Spring Village Historic site and also to the Cape May Zoo.
Presently the CMSL is only certified for frieght operations on the entire 27 mile stretch of trackage from Tuckahoe to Cape May City.

On November 1, 2003 the West Jersey Chapter of the NRHS, a member group of the URHS, hosted an excursion on the Cape May Seashore Lines (CMSL) between Cape May Court House and Cape May City.
These have been loaned to CMSL for their use and to ensure their ongoing maintenance until the items can be incorporated in a railroad museum in New Jersey.
