Cape Palmas is a geographic feature on the coast of Africa at the extreme southwest corner of the northern half of the continent, located at latitude 4.375 (4° 22' 34" N) and longitude -7.7169444 (7° 43' 1" W).
The Cape itself consists of a small, rocky peninsula connected to the mainland by a sandy isthmus.
The name Cape Palmas is generalized to indicate the entire surrounding region of Maryland County.

The description of the coast to the north of Cape Palmas is hopelessly distorted, because Ptolemy confused the Islands of Cape Verde with the Canary Islands.
To the south of Cape Soloention, Ptolemy mentions a Great Harbor (Magnus Portus) at 14°N 10° P which proves to be the Great Opening of Hanno and the Palsum of Pliny (Geba Estuary, 14°43’N 12°09’ W), 2_° east of Cape Verde, which is correct.
Cape St. John is at 0°58’E. The difference of about 8° is caused by the confusion of the Canary Islands with the Islands of Cape Verde.

The expedition was intended to punish the Kru and Grebo people for their alleged attacks on American shipping, and to assist Liberia and Cape Palmas in their struggle against the indigenous people in Kru Coast and Cape Palmas.

In this 1849 letter, President Joseph Jenkins Roberts of Liberia appeals to the government and people of the United States for aid in purchasing the territory of Gallinas, enabling Liberia to control the West-African coast from Sierra Leone to Cape Palmas.
As incentive, Roberts boasts of the eradication of the slave trade in territories recently acquired by Liberia and points out that adding Gallinas would enable the republic to keep the whole coast "free from the demoralizing and wilting influence of the Slave trade."
Cape Palmas, founded in 1834, was the original settlement of the Maryland Colonization Society, which purchased the peninsula with muskets, powder, cloth, pots, beads, and other items of trade.
