  History of Cape Vincent, NY
In many respects the history of Cape Vincent is unlike that of any other town of the county, for within its territorial boundaries is one of the most interesting localities from a purely historic point of view to be found in northern New York.
St. Lawrence is a small hamlet in the extreme eastern portion of the town, in a fertile agricultural region.
St. Vincent de Paul's church (Catholic) of Cape Vincent village was organized as a parish in 1850, by the priest in charge of the older church in the central part of the town, and was in a manner the offshoot from that as the mother society.

Vincent's College, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, was founded in stages between 1838 and 1843.
Although St. Vincent's had been established as a lay college, by the 1850s it started to become a mixed seminary/college.
When the high school closed, the mission of St. Vincent's College was reexamined and changed from a preparatory seminary to a center for evangelization.

The naval Battle of Cape St Vincent took place on 14 February 1797, near Cape St. Vincent, Portugal, between a British fleet and a Spanish fleet and was an important battle during the Wars of the French Revolution.
On February 6, Jervis was joined off Cape St. Vincent by a reinforcement of five ships of the line from the Channel Fleet under Rear-Admiral William Parker.
Jervis was elevated to the peerage as Earl St. Vincent.

The naval Battle of Cape St Vincent, or Battle of Cape Santa Maria, took place on 16 January 1780, during the American Revolutionary War and was a victory of a British fleet under Admiral Sir George Rodney over a Spanish squadron under Don Juan de Lángara.
Rodney's fleet, on its way to relieve Gibraltar which was under siege by the Spanish, caught de Langara's smaller squadron of nine ships of the line.

 The Battle of Cape St Vincent
The knowledge that the Spanish Fleet was at sea, with the likelihood of a fleet action, brought Commodore Horatio Nelson hurrying in the frigate Minerve from Gibraltar to join Jervis; on the night of 11th February 1797 sailing unobserved through the Spanish Fleet.
Reaching the British Fleet off Cape St Vincent on 13th February 1797 Nelson informed his admiral that the Spanish Fleet was approaching and Jervis prepared for battle.
Looking to take further part in the battle Nelson transferred to Minerve and called for a launch to take him to the nearest ship of the line, Irresistible; but by the time he reached her the battle was ending and the Spanish Fleet heading for Cadiz.

The legend of the martyr Saint Vincent is that his relics were mysteriously transported by ravens from the Holy Land to the Cape and subsequently guarded by them.
As Sagres is located on the south side of the Cape its natural protection from the western winds and rough seas lent itself to the building by Prince Henry the Navigator (Dom Afonso Henrique), of a fort in which to house his School devoted to Navigation and Exploration.
The beaches immediately to the north of the Cape are more exposed to the winds and rollers of the Atlantic with quite dangerous offshore currents.

The battle which took place on St. Valentine's day, February 14th marked a turning point in the war, which up until then had little glory for the British.
Sir John Jervis in the VICTORY (100) was commanding a British fleet in early 1797 and was awaiting the return of Commodore Nelson's squadron from the West Indies where it had been engaged in a special mission.
Jervis was rewarded for his audacious action by elevation to the peerage and he became the Earl St. Vincent.

On February 14th, Admiral Sir John Jervis, with 15 naval ships of the line was sailing 25 miles off Cape St Vincent off the coast of Portugal when he encountered 27 Spanish ships under the command of Don Jose de Cordoba sailing from Cadiz.
Viewed across the damaged stern of the 80-gun San Nicholas, Nelson drives HMS Captain onto the Spanish vessel in order that she can be boarded and taken as a prize, the British marines and men scrambling up the Captains bowsprit to use it as a bridge.
During the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, Nelsons ship the Captain (a 74 gun ship) is shown on the left, and has run alongside the 80 gun San Nicholas.

Captain Horatio Nelson commanded the 'Captain' on which were one hundred men of the Welsh Regiment (the spelling changed from Welsh to Welch in 1920), under Lt. Pearson, and who were serving as Marines.
The Welsh Regiment were later awarded the Battle Honour 'St Vincent', which no other British Regiment possesses, and were also granted the unique distinction of wearing a Naval Crown and the superscription '12 April 1782' on the Colours.
This superscription was granted to commemorate the 'Battle of the Saints', the regiment having taken part in the battles of Bellisle and Martinique.
