The Value of Gold to New Zealand   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The remains of mining machinery at Terawhiti, Wellington Province.
Gold had been found near Cape Terawhiti in 1862 and small quartz mines were being worked in 1883, but the pockets of quartz were soon exhausted and the mining machinery abandoned, though there may be more gold at a greater depth in this neighbourhood.
The alluvial 'face' is washed with water under pressure, the wash dirt eventually passing through a sluice box, or over gold saving tables.

To the east of the strait, it is the south island which recedes, the coast running southwest after reaching the headland of Cape Campbell.
At its narrowest point, the Strait is 24 kilometres wide, this being between Cape Terawhiti in the North Island and Perano Head on Arapawa Island in the Marlborough Sounds.

After half an hour we were sailing in 15 knots N/W which continued until Cape Terawhiti when the wind in typical Cook Strait style suddenly increased.
As we drew abeam of the Cape Palliser light, about 7nm off, it was like someone threw a switch and we found ourselves with no wind in a lumpy sea.
After two nights at sea we were approaching Cape Kidnappers and a front was catching up with us so we put into Napier to let it pass.

Terawhiti Station is not the usual off-track route as there are quite a few tracks, and the best off-track plans could be defeated by gorse, but I was delighted to get permission to go through the property.
The going was easy with just a bit of rock to negotiate before we reached the wide ridge top in time for lunch at the Terawhiti Trig at noon.
From this point it was little more than 30 minutes to join the road down and we were back at the cars in just over 7 hours, so we would have had time to get to Ohau Hill and return before dark.

 Crossing Plan
Where a strait is long with relatively straight coastlines, for instance Foveaux Strait or Shelikof Strait between Kodiak Island and the Alaska Peninsula, the choice is the strongest 'land to land' straight line crossing.
Where a strait has capes or reefed headlands jutting out seawards into the narrowest part, it is best to look for a longer crossing as these headlands/capes invariably have violent tidal stream activity in the way of overfalls, races and rips.
On a calm day, the paddler may be able to fight through such areas, however with any weather tide effect, wind blowing against tidal stream, these areas need treating with great caution and respect.

From all the data that I compiled I worked out that I could look at rows around the NI and SI separately or to and from cities.
Unfortunately the trip across Cook Strait from Cape Terawhiti (NI) to Perano Head (SI) is 20,000m which is a big row – I couldn't make it any smaller.
But all the other rows range from 3000m – 15,000m (average about 8000m) and I have tried to vary it as much as possible.
