  New Zealand Lighthouses
The original lantern was removed in 1944 and relocated to Cape Saunders in 1948; the present lantern was relocated from Cape Foulwind in 1947.
Cape Maria van Diemen, facing the Tasman Sea, is the westernmost of the three points of land at the northern end of New Zealand, the other two being Cape Reinga and North Cape.
The lighthouse was prefabricated in Pimlico, England, and is a twin of the Cape Egmont Light.

Cape Wanbrow is located in Oamaru on the south Island of New Zealand.
At Cape Wanbrow there is also a lighthouse which was used to guide the ships and boats entering the harbour.
At the Cape Wanbrow, Oamaru New Zealand you will also discover the yellow eyed penguins which is a rare penguin species and sometimes find New Zealand fur seal and elephant seal on the rocks.

 Cape Wanbrow
First lit on 1 December, 1874, the Cape Wanbrow lighthouse was a wooden cottage with the beacon in the window and the keepers quarters in the cottage.
The lighthouse was classified as a harbour light by the Marine Department and administered by the Oamaru Harbour Board.
Over the next 20 years the Oamaru Harbour Board and the Marine Department were to argue over the merits of Cape Wanbrow becoming a coastal lighthouse.

Drive 5km to the lighthouse which is at the end of the road.
From the Cape Reinga car park, take the track down to Te Werahi beach, walk along the beach to the Cape Maria van Diemen turnoff (1 hr 45 min).
The walk out to the cape is another 1 hr 30 min return trip.

The Territorials were mobilised, the National Reserve went into camp at the Oamaru Race course, service in the Home Guard became compulsory and finally Cape Wanbrow became a Military area closed to the public.
The restoration of the Cape Wanbrow Military Area is now into it's fifth year, The Magazine has had new doors constructed, it is now secured and used to store materials.
The gun and recently purchased Barr and Stroud Range Finder, identical to the one used on the Cape's OP are now on display in a local museum in the Harbourside Area.

It is worthwhile spending an hour, and a little effort, to climb ‘Puketapu’ for the panoramic view from Taiaroa Head in the south to Cape Wanbrow (Oamaru) and up the Shag Valley.
Palmerston thrives as a rural centre serving the productive farmland surrounding it, although its clear air and warm sunshine have made it increasingly popular as a holiday centre.

Access to the latter (at Mt. Maunganui) is by a narrow gap in the beach barrier built right across the front of a wide and shallow bay.
From East Cape to Cape Palliser the coastline is, for the most part, a line of cliffs made by the rapid trimming back of the spur ends in a recently elevated weak-rock hill country.
The former is sheltered somewhat in the lee of Cape Wanbrow, but making the latter has required the building of a big breakwater.

The people of Oamaru turned out in force to celebrate Push Play Day on Sunday (6 November) despite the poor weather conditions.
According to Sport Waitaki Coordinator, Grahame Johnston, more than 140 people participated in the day’s activities which included a walk of the Cape Wanbrow Track followed by family orientated games at King George Park.
Dodge ball proved popular among the children with more than a few adults also taking part.

 Ghosts of Oamaru
It comes from the hills, draining a limestone reservoir, a natural steep sided ‘punch bowl’ formed in the limestone.
And the creek wandered, finding its way to the sea with many twists and turns, ending in a lagoon, and finally draining into the sea by Cape Wanbrow.
For folk to settle here, the creek needed to be bridged – and straightened.
