The tombolo consists of a basement of basalt and Upper Tertiary sediments regarded by Jenkin (1962, 1974) as equivalents of the Warneet Beds, overlain by siliceous and calcareous sands form the active and partially stabilized dunes of the body of the isthmus.
The tie-bar or tombolo is accorded the same significance status as Cape Woolamai as it is regarded as an integral part of the tombolo complex.

The name Cape Woolamai, was originally given by navigator, George Bass in 1798, describing the area as 'a high and rather steep cape resembling a snapper's head.'
From 1891, the red granite in this area was mined from Red Point, Cape Woolamai, and shipped to Melbourne, where it was used for many of the early buildings in the City of Melbourne.

The construction of a new rotunda/barbeque shelter at Cape Woolamai has been completed and the installation of tables and seats will shortly follow.
A partnership was then formed between Council and the Cape Woolamai Residents and Ratepayers Association (CWRRA), who applied for a grant from the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development.
The grant was successful and the groups received $18,000 towards the total cost of the $36,000 project.

"The Cape Woolamai Community (Phillip Island) has set up a trust fund to assist the young family of local kiteboarder Damien McKay who died last week after being critically injured in a kiteboarding accident at Woolamai Safety Beach (inside the heads opposite San Remo).
We do not have an accurate report of the accident yet but it is beleived that Damien was kiting alone and hit some rocks in gusty winds.
The Woolamai community have established a trust fund to support Damien\'s family - wife Leah and two children, Balin aged 3, and Jana aged 1.
