Bayly's personal view is that the Cape Blend producers - 34 at last count - should follow Mike Ratcliffe's lead and drive the establishment of Cape Blend as a category.
Wosa promotes Pinotage and Pinotage-based blends in overseas tastings and shows, but Morgenthal feels that forcing a Cape Blend category in traditional markets could be premature because "many overseas markets haven't started to understand Pinotage as a viable marketing category yet".
Reasoning that Cape Blends are making headway regardless, he agrees with Bayly that the issue should be driven by individual producers, and adds that the wines must be good.

Cape Blend, in hindsight, seems to be a ‘natural’ – using the Cape’s own wine, pinotage, which provides lovely fruit and texture, to blend with historically fine reds such as cabernet, which gives structure and length.

One of the terms you'll hear bandied about a lot will be Cape blends, a concept in the making, patterned after the world-famous, often-copied Bordeaux blends, or California's Meritages; in other words, grape varieties blended according to a fixed pattern, if not necessarily proportion.
To be distinctive, a Cape blend should in all likelihood contain Pinotage, the pretty much grown-only-in-South-Africa grape variety that assures the result is something unique.
A more recent Flagstone arrival is the Cellar Hand Backchat blend 2002, which, since it does contain Pinotage--albeit barely 10 percent--has to be considered a true red Cape blend.

It is important to note that Three Cape Ladies contains about 25% Pinotage, and wine was one of the first to be deemed a "Cape blend", due to its use of Pinotage, which is mostly confined to South Africa.
With Pinotage giving the blend a unique "South African" flavour, this could be a sign that the grape is winning favour in the huge US market.

The biggest bone of contention, though, is whether Cape blends necessarily have to include the grape most closely (but not always positively) associated with South Africa: Pinotage.
This USP factor is an equally compelling argument against those who say a Cape blend should be the best blend that the Cape can produce, regardless of whether it contains Pinotage or not.
Even if the term is never formalised, I can’t help feeling that the staunchly anti-Pinotage brigade will continue describing their blends as Bordeaux- or Rhône-style anyway, lest labelling them as a Cape blend leads consumers to believe that what they’re drinking contains Pinotage.
