  Capel Lofft
Capel Lofft (November 14, 1751 - May 26, 1824), English miscellaneous writer, was born in London.
Byron, in a note to his English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, ridiculed Lofft as "the Maecenas of shoemakers and preface-writer general to distressed versemen; a kind of gratis accoucheur to those who wish to be delivered of rhyme, but do not know how to bring forth." He died at Montcalieri, near Turin.
His fourth son Capel Lofft, the younger (1806-1873), also a writer on various topics, inherited his father's liberal ideas and principles, and carried them in youth to greater extremes.

The 'Powers that Be' were not amused, and after the final downfall of the French, Capel Lofft seems to have thought it better to travel abroad awhile, and, in fact, he died on foreign soil in 1824.
Capel Lofft fought strenuously for a reprieve, but failed, and on the morning of 23rd April, 1800, she was trundled along in a cart to the place of execution in Bury.
In 1804, Capell Lofft sold the next turn of the rectories for £1800 to Mr George Bidwell of Thetford, who became Rector in 1811 on the death of the previous Incumbent, Dr Hamilton, who was a grandson of one of the Dukes of Hamilton.

The Richard Vallance Sonnet Review, March 2002
Born on November 14th., 1751, to a prosperous family, a precocious boy, Capel Lofft cultivated early on a taste for poetry, music and natural history.
Although Loffts own poetry was sparse and uneven, and he must by all accounts be considered a minor poet of the late 18th.
This Sonnet strongly echoes his fervent convictions over the abusive practices and behaviour of the landed English gentry in the traditional hunt, which for Lofft was nothing but a barbaric and cruel "sport" for the amusement of the rich and idle.

The poem that made his reputation, The Farmer's Boy, was written in a garret in Bell Alley where half a dozen other men were at work, and the finished lines he carried in his head until there was time to write them down.
The manuscript, declined by several publishers, fell into the hands of Capel Lofft, a Suffolk squire of literary tastes, who arranged for its publication with woodcuts by Thomas Bewick in 1800.
