Communities of the northern and western coast were harshly affected by the volancoe's eruption, as agricultural lands were untillable and covered with sand and ash.
The economy of the island generated some prosperity until 1957, when the Capelinhos Volcano erupted in the western part of the island, reactivating emigration to North America, supported by promises of aid made by a Massachusetts senator to the affected populations.

A legend tells that "if you arrive by boat and you want to have an easy trip back to home you mast leave a drawing on the jetty", so all the pier is decorated with augural paintings by sailors that call in the port, it's very impressive to see.
In this isle you must see the old volcano Caldeira and also the Capelinhos that's really a natural wander, it's a new developed volcano spreading from the sea about 40 years ago, it originated a totally new piece of coast with a lunar appearance, and obviously destroyed the villages and farms nearby, luckily without victims.
I also suggest you to visit the little museum dedicated to the Capelinhos eruption that has many impressive photos and an interesting collection of the press articles about the earthquake and the eruption in 1957.
