 Caper stories
There is often a villain-hero inversion in caper movies, where the 'criminals' are the good guys and the security forces are the bad guys.
Caper movies typically involve stealing from rich people, casinos or impersonal museums, thus reducing the 'badness' of the theft as no individual who would be harmed by the theft is involved.
These stories are thus related to the Robin Hood story, where we are invited to fantasize about engaging in unlawful activities, yet from a safe moral standpoint.

  Caper story
The caper story is a subgenre of crime fiction.
The caper story is distinguished from the straight crime story by elements of humor, adventure, or unusual cleverness or audacity.
For instance, the Dortmunder stories of Donald E. Westlake are highly comic tales involving unusual thefts by a gang of offbeat characters — in different stories Dortmunder's gang steals the same gem several times, steals an entire branch bank, and kidnaps someone from an asylum by driving a stolen train onto the property.

  AML-List Review: Characters and Viewpoint
The events of the story are usually performed by characters or emerge from the milieu, and the discovery of an idea can also be an event in the tale.
A short story would probably only be able to deal with one or two, where a novel could deal with changes in all of a character's relationships.
If the story begins as a milieu story, readers will gladly follow any number of story lines of every type, letting them be resolved here and there as needed, continuing to read in order to discover more of the milieu.

The first two Caper storylines were so strong and vivid, it’s understandable that this modern-day arc would lack the punch those unique settings had.
But Caper has delved into so much period art, history, and pop-culture, you gotta ask what’s so special about a modern-day crime story from the same team.
