Topic: Caphtorim

PART TWO: THE LINEAGE OF HAM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Genesis tells us that the Caphtorim were descended from the Mizrai and, through the absence of any qualifying remark, leaves us with the strong implication that the Caphtorim therefore dwelt on the mainland of Egypt and North Africa either amongst, or in close proximity to their forebears, the Mizraim.
Furthermore, Josephus relates the involvement and subsequent defeat of the Caphtorim in the Ethiopic War, a conflagration that was confined to the borders of Egypt and Ethiopia, and which did not, as for as we know, involve the isles of the sea.
To identify the Caphtorim as early Cretans is therefore a clearly untenable position, and is due to the unquestioning though wrongful assumption amongst today's scholars that the Table of Nations is not to be taken seriously as a historically reliable account (see Map 3).

 Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary - 1Chronicles 1
Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth--The three sons of this patriarch are enumerated, partly because they were the founders of the new world, and partly because the fulfilment of Noah's prophecy (Ge 9:25-27) could not otherwise appear to have been verified.
Casluhim (of whom came the Philistines), and Caphtorim--a better rendering is, "and Casluhim, of whom came the Philistim and Caphtorim." They were brethren, the sons of Casluhim, and at first dwelt together, whence their names are used interchangeably.
The Caphtorim are described as inhabiting Azzah, or Gaza, the seat of the Philistines.

Genesis tells us that the Caphtorim were descended from the Mizraim, and, through the absence of any qualifying remarks, leaves us with the strong implication that the Caphtorim therefore dwelt on the mainland of Egypt or North Africa either amongst, or in close proximity to, their forebears the Mizraim.
Furthermore, Josephus relates the involvement and subsequent defeat of the Caphtorim (whom he names the Cephtorim) in the Ethiopic War, a conflagration that was confined to the borders of Egypt and Ethiopia, and which did not, as far as we know, involve the isles of the sea.
Thus, to identify the Caphtorim as early Cretans is clearly untenable.

Mizraim - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mizraim was the brother of Cush who, together along with Phut and Canaan, made up the Hamite branch of Noah's descendants.
Mizraim's sons were Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, Pathrusim, Casluhim (out of whom came the Philistines), and Caphtorim.
In order for Mizraim's name to have any meaning, Egypt must have already been founded (and also divided into Upper and Lower Egypt).

Perhaps before the time of Moses they dwelt near and were subjugated by the Caphtorim (@De 2:23) and subsequently delivered.
Between Palestine and Idumea there was a city Caparorsa; and their close connection with Palestine on the one hand, and Egypt (Mizraim, @Ge 10:13,14) on the other hand, makes this locality the most likely.

If the text reflects a tradition that goes back to the Mosaic period, this is logical to expect, since the Philistines were not "settled" by Pharaoh Ramesses III on the coast of southern Canaan before the time of Moses.
Therefore, if the Caphtorim were the ancestors of the Philistines (Stiebing 1980, 14) and the Philistines of Medinet Habu did not arrive in Canaan before the time of Ramesses III, then Deuteronomy 2:23 may also give us an approximate time for the coming of the Philistines into Canaan.
There, Moses reviews the chronology of events after leaving Egypt and states, "As for the Avvim, who had lived in settlements in the vicinity of Gaza, the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their place." Moses does not use the term Philistines, though Joshua does.
