In Capileira houdt de doorgaande weg in principe op, en als de Veleta door sneeuw niet bereikbaar is, dan is hier tevens het eindpunt een paar kilometer buiten het dorp.
Vanaf dit punt is het nog zo'n 25km klimmen.
Capileira nog heel lang achter ons steeds kleiner en kleiner zien worden en op steeds meer plaatsen beginnen alle andere bergen ook steeds lager en lager te worden.

After a long wait at the carousel we all finally had our baggage and it was off to the bus for the 2 1/2 journey to Capileira, first driving along the coast through the Costa del Sol before turning north and heading for the hills with the furthest and highest capped with snow.
But we were here to walk not to lounge around sampling the local cuisine, so it was off for a short walk to explore the village and get our bearings before returning to the hotel for diner, a briefing and the opportunity to get to know other members of the group.
A small stray dog who we called Scruffy but was also known as Maria joined us at the start of the walk, we were expecting her to turn back when we came to the edge of the village but she just kept on going.

Capileira and Bubion, very attractive local pueblos, have a selection of bars and restaurants, a bank, pharmacy, bakery, supermarket etc. and are only five minutes away by car.
When you leave the Granada/Motril highway to head for Capileira, the road wriggles like a snake as it climbs up into the Sierras through Lanjaron and the large market town of Orgiva.
When you reach Capileira, you will be at 1400m and in an area that is a totally protected natural park.

At the refuge, I calculated that I had 3 hours to get to Capileira in order to meet the original pick-up plan.
To make it easier for mules, the path was paved with large stones and steps were built in at intervals - fine foe mules, but the spacing of the steps was bad for walkers - with heavy packs.
On entering Capileira, I stopped for half an hour and freshened up at an ice cold fountain.

Three villages cling to the steep eastern slopes of the middle stretch of the Poqueira river valley: Capileira, Bubión and Pampaneira.
The house has been converted from the original village forge, and has a wonderful view across the valley.
Bubión (1299m.) is a 45 minute walk across the hillside from Capileira, or 25 minutes following the road, whilst Pampaneira (1055m.) is a further 30 minutes down the valley.

So back to Capileira for something to eat, we found what looked like a lovely restaurant, and after a couple of glasses of the local wine we asked the waiter if we could set our own table...no problem, so out came the Xmas tablecloth, Xmas decorations and candles and crackers.
Not the most memorable Xmas for any of us, but the drive up there is worth it, the scenery terrific, and the local wines were excellent.
Capileira is 1450 m above sea level and 2 hours drive from Nerja (89Kilometers)
