Capillary action - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Capillary action or capillarity is the ability of a narrow tube to draw a liquid upwards against the force of gravity.
The weight of the liquid column is proportional to the square of the tube's diameter, but the contact area between the liquid and the tube is proportional only to the diameter of the tube, so a narrow tube will draw a liquid column higher than a wide tube.
A plant makes use of capillary action to draw liquid water into its system, although larger plants require transpiration to move a sufficient quantity of water to where it is required.

 Patent 4272970: Compression refrigeration system
The capillary tube is positioned in an enclosure and the warm liquid refrigerant coming from the condenser flows into the enclosure in a heat exchange relationship with the capillary tube, enters the capillary tube, and flows to the evaporator.
A flow tube is positioned in the enclosure having an inlet in communication with the interior of the enclosure and the outlet of the flow tube being connected to the enclosure outlet.
The capillary tube 22 includes an inlet 34 in communication with the interior of the enclosure 30 for receiving the liquid refrigerant returning from the condenser 18 and an outlet 36 connected to line 24 and thus connected to the inlet of the evaporator 26.

When such a tube of glass, open at both ends, is placed vertically with its lower end immersed in water, the water is observed to rise in the tube, and to stand within the tube at a higher level than the water outside.
He considered the capillary phenomena to be of the same kind, but his explanation is not sufficiently explicit with respect to the nature and the limits of the action of the attractive force.
This expression is the same as that for the rise of a liquid in a tube, except that instead of r, the radius of the tube, we have a the distance of the plates.

The heater tube through which current passes is small in diameter and only slightly larger than the glass capillary tube and is designed to efficiently transfer the heat directly to the capillary tube.
A heater tube 100 made of fully hardened stainless steel or a high resistance nickel/chromium alloy tubing having a 0.031 inch outer diameter and a 0.020 inch inner diameter is inserted into an alumina tube 110 having an outer diameter of 0.062 inch and inner diameter of 0.032 inch as shown in FIG.
The copper tube is purposefully oversized to allow sufficient thermal grounding of the tube to the ambient to reduce the variations in temperature of the tube along its length, and also, to allow for variations in oven wall thickness among the various gas chromatograph instruments.

The capillary tube — the simplest of refrigerant controls — is the most popular method for metering refrigerant flow from the condenser to the evaporator in compression-type refrigeration systems.
The length and diameter of the capillary tube is chosen to match the flow capacity of the tube to the pumping capacity of the compressor.
The lengths of tubing are identical, as are the diameters of the capillary tubes.

Liquid at Top of Capillary Tube
There are several competing forces acting on the liquid: (a) the cohesive forces of the liquid (its own attraction to itself) exhibited by the strength of its surface tension, (b) the attraction of the liquid to the inside surface of the tube (sometimes referred to as "wetting"), and (c) the gravity acting on the liquid.
The height of climb depends on the nature (molecular structure, surface tension, density and viscosity) of the liquid, the inner diameter of the tube, the contact angle between the meniscus and tube wall, and the composition of the tube's inner wall.
If the capillary is too narrow, viscous drag will slow the filling velocity, and surface tension will be high when the water starts to bulge outwards at the destination end.

Template into Micro-Bore Capillary during DNA Separation with Capillary Electrophoresis Background of the Invention Area of the Art The invention relates generally to capillary electrophoresis of biomolecule analytes, and specifically to methods and reagents for preparing nucleic acid samples for nucleic acid separation with capillary electrophoresis.
Therefore, during the electrokinetic injection of the DNA sequencing fragments, the amount of analyte introduced into the capillary is limited by the buildup of nucleic acid template at the injection end of the capillary.
In preparing a sample for capillary electrophoretic separation, the sample is dissolved in or mixed with an amount of a reagent of the present invention.

After the pressure is stable, isolate the capillary tube and manifold from the gas inlet line and condense the gas in the lower portion of the tube with liquid nitrogen.
The bulk density of a sealed tube can be determined from the orthobaric liquid and vapor densities of the CO or SF (obtained from the literature) and measurements of the meniscus position and internal capillary height at a specific temperature.
