 [No title]
But those who have rejected this definition of capital have usually done so, not on the ground that it was unfitted to solve the "problems of capital," but that it was too radical a departure from established usage; in other words, because it failed to satisfy the requirements, not of science, but of terminology.
His capital is therefore identical with one of my senses of capital; namely, "capital-value."(42*) In a very excellent paper,(43*) which has recently appeared, Fetter emphasizes, with Clark, the fact that rent and interest apply equally to all goods, the one to the things themselves, the other to their value.
His definition of capital, "surplus wealth(44*) as a possession," although somewhat vague, seems entirely acceptable, and, if literally interpreted, is exactly equivalent to the value of the "stock of wealth existing at an instant of time." But the term "surplus" has been used in so many senses that it always needs interpretation.

 Capital
Some capital, things treated as such by Böhm-Bawerk and others, is not the result of labor at all, -- for example, the meteoric lump of gold, the annual crop of fruits on an untied field, the yield of a mineral spring.
Nearly all capital owes in part its economic existence to labor; but its value is not measured by the "amount of labor," whatever that may mean, any more than it is measured by the amount of uses of land.
In the concept of capital must be united both the thought of concrete things and that of their value, for their quantity is only measurable in a way that permits of comparison in terms of value.

social capital: civic community, organization and education
In that sense social capital is closely related to what some have called “civic virtue.” The difference is that “social capital” calls attention to the fact that civic virtue is most powerful when embedded in a sense network of reciprocal social relations.
Those concerned with social capital have looked to the density of social networks that people are involved in; the extent to which they are engaged with others in informal, social activities; and their membership of groups and associations (see la via associative).
Useful critical exploration of the notion of social capital and its theoretical origins and the extent to which 'it avoids a proper confrontation with political economy and, as a result of its origins and evolution, has become chaotic'.

The relative declines in social capital are similar within each educational category--roughly 25 percent in group memberships and roughly 30 percent in social trust since the early 1970s, and probably even more since the early 1960s.
Since the family itself is, by some accounts, a key form of social capital, perhaps its eclipse is part of the explanation for the reduction in joining and trusting in the wider community.
In short, the very decades that have seen a national deterioration in social capital are the same decades during which the numerical dominance of a trusting and civic generation has been replaced by the dominion of "post-civic" cohorts.
