  Bambooweb: Capital controversy
Capitalist income is the rate of profit multiplied by the amount of capital, but the measurement of the "amount of capital" involves adding up quite incompatible physical objects -- adding trucks to lasers, for example.
In general, this says that physical capital is heterogeneous and cannot be added up the way that financial capital can.
Sraffa instead showed that a change in the rate of profit would change the measured amount of capital, and in highly nonlinear ways: an increase in the rate of profit might initially increase the perceived value of the truck more than the laser, but then reverse the effect at still higher rates of profit.

Investment or capital accumulation in classical economic theory is the act of producing increased capital.
Social capital is the value of trusting relationships between individuals in an economy.
However, this increasingly distinguishes means of capital investment, and collection of potential rewards for patent, copyright (creative or individual capital), and trademark (social trust or social capital) instruments.

Capital controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Capital reversing renders meaningless the neoclassical concepts of input substitution and capital or labor scarcity.
The equation of the rate of return on capital goods with the marginal product of capital is true under the simplifying assumption that there exists only one good, other than labor, and that this good can be used both as the consumption and capital good.
Since Samuelson had been one of the main defenders of the idea that heterogenous capital could be treated as a single capital good, his article conclusively showed that results from simplified models with one capital good do not necessarily hold in more general models.

 Capital Gains Taxation
The central controversy concerning capital gains is whether or not they are to be treated as actual income.
A capital gains tax cut would not have a noticeable positive impact on the economy, according to supporters of the tax, as investment decisions are rarely influenced by taxes.
Many conservative groups that favor tax relief, such as the American Council for Capital Formation, are quick to point out their perceived successes of the reform package passed by Congress in 1997.

John W. Lamperti | Capital Punishment
The evidence for capital punishment as an uniquely effective deterrent to murder is especially important, since deterrence is the only major pragmatic argument on the pro-death penalty side.
It is sometimes suggested that capital punishment provides added protection to police or to prison guards, and a number of states which have abolished capital punishment for "ordinary" murder retain it for the killing of police or prison staff.
Bailey and Peterson, for example, conclude that "Deterrence and capital punishment studies have yielded a fairly consistent pattern of non deterrence." Although they find agreement that "the overall (general) homicide rate is not responsive to capital punishment," they do call for further research into particular types of crimes.

If the capital gains of good years must be paid out currently to avoid surtax liability, but no carry-forward of the capital losses of bad years is allowed, the tendency over a period of years will be to shrink the value of capital assets.
The sale of almost any capital asset on the installment plan can be so arranged as to convert a large part of the interest income into the form of a capital gain merely by reducing the nominal rate of interest and raising the principal price by a compensatory amount.
Part of the capital gains realized by common stockholders and direct proprietors of tangible property during such periods are obtained at the expense of their creditors, whose monetary claims are fixed.

When you look closely at this controversial issue, you find objective reality, pure fantasy, and personal religious beliefs are all scrambled together.

During the Class Period, Bain Capital participated in the issuance of statements which it knew were false and/or misleading for the purpose of selling American Pad securities.
Bain Capital also wanted to take American Pad public to improve American Pad's financial condition so that American Pad would be able to pay millions of dollars to it for so-called "advisory fees," thus permitting Bain Capital to continue to plunder American Pad.

The Controversy over the Concept of Capital   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
For it became the practice for capital sums of money not only to be loaned out but also to be invested by the borrowers to whom it had been loaned, or alternatively, to be invested directly by the owners in lieu of being put out to loan.
This transfer consisted in regarding the money capital as if it were still in hand and operative, and, furthermore, in looking upon the yield from the investment as interest on the invested capital.
In either case the yield-producing wealth could be looked upon as representing capital, and its yield could be regarded as the interest derived from the capital.

Note that, in the case of the unit of capital, the rate of profit is calculated on the total constant capital outlaid; whereas in the value of a commodity, C represents just the depreciation of constant capital involved in the production of the product.
But since capitalism is a profit-driven system, since capitalists will always put their money where there is the expectation of a higher rate of profit, there must be capital flows between industries causing a tendency for the rate of profit throughout the economy to equalise.

This week, the chairman of the Association of Unit Trusts of Namibia, Danie Kotze, said the controversy appeared to have been a power struggle between the central bank and Namfisa, regarding who had the power to regulate the unit trust industry.
Although both Namfisa and the central bank had promised feedback to the industry regarding the controversy, nothing has been heard from the two institutions.

I would, therefore, like suggestions as how to teach the capital controversy (alternatively, critical views of marginal productivity theory) in a meaningful way at the 2nd year level.

In the wake of a crisis characterized by volatile financial flows and contagious currency crises, capital mobility is increasingly seen as a mixed blessing.
