Both houses of Congress meet at the neoclassical Capitolio Nacional ("National Capitol") building in central Bogotá, the construction of which began in 1847 and was not concluded until 1926.
Every house has its own election procedure and individual powers that make them different from each other, which are further discussed in the article for each individual chamber.

The Capitolio was the seat of the Cuban Congress until 1959 and now houses the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the National Library of Science and Technology.

The Capitolio Federal occupies an entire city block, and, with its golden domes and neoclassical pediments, can seem even bigger.
The building was commissioned by Guzmán Blanco in the 1870s, and is most famous for its Salón Elíptico, an oval hall with a mural-covered dome and walls lined with portraits of the country's great and good.
The Caracas metro has been in operation since 1983 and is the safest and quickest way to travel in the city.

Stroll through the Catedral to see the Rubens painting of Christ's Resurrection and, on the south side of the plaza, Concejo Municipal, where the Venezuelan Declaration of Independence was written (the building is now the town hall).
Also worth a visit is the Panteon Nacional, which contains the remains of Simon Bolivar and other national heroes.

Nowadays, the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural (the National Museum of Natural History) has its venue within the building and contains the largest natural history collection in the country.
One of the oldest and best of the Spanish colonial monasteries on the island, this building is now home to the Centro Nacional de Restauración, Conservación y Museología or CENCREM (National Centre for Restoration, Conservation and Museum Studies).
