Using Capos   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
A capo is a mechanical device that clamps onto the neck of the guitar.
Since the capo is at the 5th (five) fret, you count backwards five half steps from D (the chord you want to play): D - C# - C - B - A# - A. To sound a D chord with a 5th fret capo, you use an A chord shape.

Capo Ferro stated "You know that in my book of the art, there is one good guard that is a low guard called third, with the sword in a plane in the straight line.
Capo Ferro noted that a number of different kinds of steps (movement) could be used in rapier play.
As Capo Ferro succinctly states that fencing is the art of defending oneself well with the sword, defense should always be the primary concern.

It is not essential to understand music theory to use a capo, although a basic knowledge of theory is required for the "advanced" part of the lesson.
A capo is a mechanical device that attaches to the neck of a guitar and acts as a "moveable nut" - the same effect as playing a barre with one finger.
Capos have been in use since the earliest fretted instruments - carvings show that Egyptians used capos probably made of twine or sinew tied around the necks of their instruments.

Page Guitar Capo Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Since most capos manage this pretty well, the differences between various types of capo have less to do with how well they work and more to do with how they are fitted into place and how well they are put together.
The capo is held in place by an inch-long screw that passes through the bottom of the U and into a second piece of metal that acts as the main grip of the mechanism.
In addition to the same fretting sleeve as their standard capo they also have wide rings that fit over top of it so different levels of pressure can be brought to bare on the thicker, wound strings and the unwound octave strings spanning the width of the neck.

Capo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A capo (short for capotasto, Italian for "head of fretboard") is a device used for shortening the strings, and hence raising the pitch, of a stringed instrument such as a guitar, mandolin or banjo.
Therefore the use of a capo is as much a matter of artistic expression as of technical expediency.
Capos with fine adjustment of the clamping force have the advantage of being less likely to upset the tuning of the instrument.

 What is a Guitar Capo?
Anyway, a guitar capo is a clamp that you stick on different frets of the guitar to change the pitch or key of the open strings.
Each fret on the guitar is a half step, therefore, if you put a capo on the 1st fret, all of the open strings will sound a half step higher than normal.
If you were to capo the guitar at the 2nd fret and play a G chord shape, then the chord sound would be that of an A chord.

 CAPOING TIPS
It didn't take me long to realize that played without a capo these songs were cumbersome (resulting in fatigue) and dark and dull sounding (not the sound most people associate with acoustic guitar).
Songs from F to D, and Bb to G, both capoed 3rd fret, and songs in Eb and Ab to D and G respectively, capoing at the first fret.
Capoing allows you to achieve the "jangle" of open strings even in the ugliest of keys.

 Shubb: Partial capo
I was introduced to the concept of partial capoing many years ago by the great acoustic guitarist Harvey Reid and by Jeff Hickey, who developed the Third Hand capo (an elastic capo designed exclusively for partial capoing).
This capo is designed to be applied from the bass side, with a step built in to skip over the bass E string, and it centers properly for improved stability.
While not as nice a mechanism as a Shubb (it's an elastic strap style capo) it is the only capo I know of that can be configured to capo ANY combination of the six guitar strings.

Shubb Partial Capo Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Turning the Partial Capo upside down so that it is depresses the A, D and G string at the second fret provides an E suspended chord and a whole new set of sounds.
The Partial Capo is made in the same design as Shubb's normal capo with sturdy, steel construction and rubber padding where it comes into contact with the guitar.
But I soon found myself starting with a typical alternate tuning, putting the capo at a fret position and then retuning one or two of the non-capoed strings to be in unison with one of the capoed ones, or an octave above or below it.

The Journal was publishing a paper about how to use the partial capo to simplify guitar fingerings for children and those with learning disabilities, and their editors did not want to give publicity to any specific commercial product.
The Shubb partial capo can clamp either an E suspended chord or an A major chord, depending on which side of the neck it is applied.
The Keyser Drop D capo is designed to clamp all but the low E string at the second fret, making the configuration we call Drop E. We were making our own versions of it out of standard Shubbs for years before they decided to start manufacturing them.

A capo is a very useful device especially if you're a singer.
This means if you normally are playing an E major chord, now you are actually playing a G major chord but you don't have to learn the whole song over again to change the key.
I know that this may be difficult to follow, but for those who aren't adept at transposing, this is a huge shortcut to a vast repertory of difficult songs.

The G7th Performance capo's wrap spring clutch consists of just three elements: a fixed hub, a moving hub, and a spring whose inside diameter is just slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the two hubs.
When the spring is forced over the two hubs, attempting to rotate in the direction which opens the capo wraps it down tightly on the hubs, positively engaging them.
To release the capo, the control tang is moved in the direction to unwind the spring, thus releasing the clutch.

 Third Hand Capo
Changing the length of an open string with a partial capo is fundamentally different than retuning the guitar, since the geometry of the scales and chords does not change, and you can play many things just as you would in standard tuning, but still achieve the sound of an open tuning.
The Third Hand Capo allows you to play things on your guitar that are not possible any other way, and it is equally useful to the total beginner, the recreational player and songwriter, and to the serious guitarist and composer.
There are many useful ways to partially capo a guitar, and there are often many different uses for particular configurations.
