Brassicales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Brassicales are an order of flowering plants, belonging to the eurosids II group of dicotyledons under the APG II system.
Brassicales sensu APG II includes families classified under Capparales in previous classifications.
Under the older Cronquist system, the Brassicales were called the Capparales, and included among the Dileniidae.

Clarification of the Carpel Number in Papaverales, Capparales, and Berberidaceae. | The Botanical Review (April, 2000)
Takhtajan's placement of the Capparales in the Dilleniidae (1959, 1987) is well supported by such characters as centrifugal development of multistaminate androecia, parietal placentation, biochemical constitution, and molecular data (Martin & Dowd, 1991; Chase et al., 1993).
The gap in floral morphology between Papaverales and Capparales is also not as large as previously thought (Endress, 1987; Karrer, 1991; Ronse Decraene & Smets, 1992, 1993a, 1993b, 1997a).
The Capparales and their allies were placed in his "Second Principal Group," which consists of the remaining dicotyledonou s taxa.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Dilleniidae -- Spring 1999
Capparales, as a name, is now well established with a large body of literature associated with the taxon, and taking up Resedales would be unfortunately.
For myself, however, I can evoke one of my principles for adopting suprageneric names, namely by accepting Capparanae at the superorder rank it follows that Capparales ought to be adopted at the ordinal rank in accord with the concept for the proper use of autonyms.
He removed both Bataceae, and in particular Gyrostemonaceae, from the Caryophyllidae to a position after the Capparales in the Dilleniidae, in part because both contain mustard-oils.

 TAXON - Summaries
Setchellanthus, however, has straight seeds with a spatulate embryo and a non-fibrous exotegmen; it lacks the reniform seeds with fibrous exotegmen characteristic of the core Capparales.
Vascular bundles in the fruit wall are amphivasal and show an extensive secondary growth that produces tracheids like those of the secondary xylem of stems; bordered pits are present in the wall of the inner epidermis cells.
The floral and seed anatomy as well as the distinctive fruit anatomy support a position of Setchellanthus that is near-basal to the core Capparales.

The goal of this study was to clarify the relationships between these two families by using evidence from DNA sequences of two regions of the chloroplast, ndhF and trnL-trnF, and by increasing sampling of Capparaceae to include most traditionally circumscribed groups.
This is not surprising given that more than one-half of the species of this family are placed in two genera, Capparis and Cleome; suggesting that plants with extreme morphological traits have been segregated out.
Surprisingly, the genus Forchhammeria (Capparaceae) appears to be either sister to the rest of the Capparaceae and Brassicaceae clade or sister to other families in the Capparales such as Pentadiplandraceae.

Glucosinolates (mustard oil glycosides) are a diverse group of plant secondary compounds found in the order capparales.
Glucosinolate side chain elongation is highly variable in two families of the capparales, Brassicaceae and Capparaceae.
The project will investigate the genetic and biochemical basis of variation in glucosinolate side-chain elongation in the capparales.

Francie Chew investigates consequences of ecological interactions between native and naturalized species, esp. native and naturalized representatives of the coevolved butterfly subfamily-plant order Pierinae-Capparales.
Current projects include examining ecological trajectories and assessing potential for natural selection in a conservation context, using mtDNA sequences to construct phylogenies of the butterflies, and investigating how these insects respond to and metabolize glucosinolates that are characteristic chemicals in the Capparales.
In addition to research in biology, Chew has served as Director of the American Studies Program at Tufts.
