Capriccio Espagnol began as a projected "Fantasy on Spanish Themes" for violin and orchestra, but Rimsky rapidly concluded that he could do better justice to the melodies with a purely orchestral work – "the Spanish themes, of dance character, furnished me with rich material for employing colourful orchestral effects".
Capriccio Espagnol is a short suite, in five linked movements.
Capriccio Espagnol is not a profound piece of music, but it is an enormously enjoyable one, and Rimsky-Korsakov knew it.

As well as being a distinguished composer and teacher in his own right (he was to teach the young Stravinsky later in life) he also spent a lot of time orchestrating, arranging and completing works left incomplete by his colleagues, most notably Mussorgsky's 'Night on the Bare Mountain' and Borodin's opera 'Prince Igor'.
Of his own works 'Scheherazade' and 'Capriccio Espagnol' are probably the most well-known.
It has always been popular - the first rehearsal was constantly interrupted by applause from the orchestra, and the composer was so pleased about this that he dedicated it to the orchestra and included a list of all the players on the title page of the original score.

Hearing the Capriccio in its entirety - particularly as it was live, and Rimsky-Korsakov's rich orchestration could be appreciated to the full - prompted me to look for a recording.
Rimsky-Korsakov wrote his "Spanish Capriccio" in 1887 as a showcase for his proficiency at orchestral colouring.
My recording of Capriccio Espagnol features Charles Dutoit conducting the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, and is available on the Decca label.

Comment: Since I was a little kid, my dad used to play Capriccio Espagnol, and it stayed in my mind.
Unlike other recordings of Capriccio Espagnol, this one is not segmented and is also a great performance of another Rimsky-Korsakov masterpiece.
Capriccio is ok. Apparently it's famous, but I don't see what all the fuss is about: seems like just an above-average work, in my opinion.

Only the Capriccio Espagnol is a passionate performance, but it falls short of the definitive Philips recording of the Rotterdam Philharmonic under David Zinman's baton.
The last movement was too slow during the fast sections and too fast during the slow sections (like the ending).

This is a case where the brevity of the work is a disadvantage as it is too short to warrant engaging a soloist for an orchestral concert, and fitting it in with another short concertante piece makes planning a concert much more difficult.
The conductor also achieves lively results with Capriccio Espagnol; however this is very much an orchestral showpiece and comparisons with some famous recordings reinforce the impression that the Bergen Philharmonic is a competent rather than great ensemble.
Similar remarks apply to the Russian Easter Festival Overture where the last drop of exoticism is lacking.
