GOATSUCKER - LoveToKnow Article on GOATSUCKER   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The common goatsucker (Caprimulgus europaeus, Linn.), is admittedly the type of a very peculiar and distinct family, Caprimulgidae, a group remarkable for the flat head, enormously wide mouth, large eyes, and soft, pencilled plumage of its members, which vary in size from a lark to a crow.
There are two ways of regarding the Caprimulgidae one including the genus Podargus and its allies, the other recognizing them as a distinct family, Podargidae.
Finally, it may be stated that none of the Caprimulgidae seem to occur in Polynesia or in New Zealand, though there is scarcely any other part of the world suited to their habits in which members of the family are not found.

Eleven pairs of closely related species belonging to families Fregatidae, Phalacrocoracidae, Accipitridae, Sternidae, Caprimulgidae, Trochilidae, Coraciidae, Tyrannidae, Cotingidae, and Hirundinidae were compared.
All but one of the phylogenetically independent comparisons showed that the species with triangular or shallowly forked tails have higher relative rachis thickness than their deeply forked relatives.

 THE BIRDS OF NEBRASKA
Comments: This is easily the most common of Nebraska's "nightjars", a group of insect-eating and semi-nocturnal birds mostly recognized (and named for) their distinctive vocalizations.
The Family name "Caprimulgidae" means "goat-sucker" and derives from European folklore to the effect that the birds drink milk from goats' udders at night.
The common nighthawk is active during daytime hours to a greater extent than the others, and its familiar "beep" call can be heard over cities and towns from late May onward.

Nightjars Caprimulgidae are passage migrants in the UAE, with the birds we see here likely to breed in Central Asia, although their range extends from Western Europe across to Far Eastern Russia, Mongolia and even China in suitable habitats.
Central Asia probably provides the bulk of the birds that pass through the UAE on their way to wintering areas in Eastern Africa, although we also see the occasional one whose plumage suggests they are of European races.
