Captain Abstraction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Captain Abstraction is the champion of the principles of abstraction and modularity.
Captain Abstraction's first recorded appearance was in a recitation section of MIT course 6.001 (Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs) in Fall, 1986.
The Captain's purple (sometimes blue) outfit is complemented by a fiery red cape, mask, and lambda symbol emblazoned on his chest.

During this trial Captain Paty ordered the chain cable moved from the bow to midships, and the sailors shifted it with great alacrity, entering into the spirit of the occasion as sailors always do when their own vessel is put to a test.
Captain Paty and his officers were accustomed to a little wine at dinner and, after tasting the Vignes wine, they found it so agreeable that they could not resist drinking of it while on the voyage.
Captain Paty and I presented Commodore Jones at Monterey some of this identical wine as being superior to anything else that could be procured for the purpose.

 Persuasion -- Chapter 11
Captain Harville had taken his present house for half a year, his taste, and his health, and his fortune all directing him to a residence unexpensive, and by the sea; and the grandeur of the country, and the retirement of Lyme in the winter, appeared exactly adapted to Captain Benwick's state of mind.
Captain Benwick looked and was the youngest of the three, and, compared with either of them, a little man. He had a pleasing face and a melancholy air, just as he ought to have, and drew back from conversation.
Captain Benwick listened attentively, and seemed grateful for the interest implied; and though with a shake of the head, and sighs which declared his little faith in the efficacy of any books on grief like his, noted down the names of those she recommended, and promised to procure and read them.

The muted harmony of gray and brown in Captain’s Watch is accented primarily by a brash pink “figure” at the top, an homage to Abstract Expressionist gestural painting.
Overall, Captain’s Watch is a compendium of the ways that paint can behave: hard edges, soft edges, one color dragged across another, one color flowing through another, and color applied as if the brush were a pencil drawing lines.
But of course it is the captain who is ultimately responsible for the ship, and if he is standing watch he is doubly responsible.

Captain Purnall wrenches open the colloid to talk with him man to man. There are times when Science does not satisfy.
Captain Hodgson opens the underbody colloid, swings the heavy pithing-iron out of its rack which in liners is generally cased as a smoking-room settee, and at two hundred feet releases the catch.

Captain Jorgan had to look high to look at it, for the village was built sheer up the face of a steep and lofty cliff.
That done, the captain put his hand in the deep breast-pocket of his long-skirted blue coat, and took out of it a strong square case-bottle,--not a large bottle, but such as may be seen in any ordinary ship's medicine-chest.
A glance at this stranger assured the captain that he could be no other than the Seafaring Man; and the captain was about to hail him as a fellow-craftsman, when the two stood still and silent before the captain, and the captain stood still, silent, and wondering before them.

Captain Bulstrode had served in India, and had once tasted a horrible spirit called bang, which made the men who drank it half-mad; and he could not help fancying that the beauty of this woman was like the strength of that alcoholic preparation -- barbarous, intoxicating, dangerous, and maddening.
Aurora and her cousin, Percy Floyd, the young Etonian, had gone down the steps, and were admiring Captain Bulstrode's thorough-bred bays, and the captain was not a little distracted by the picture the group made in the moonlight.
Here was a golden opportunity lost, thought the discontented captain, forgetful that he could scarcely have proposed to Miss Floyd at the dinner-table, amid the jingle of glasses and popping of corks, and with a big powdered footman charging at him with a side-dish or a sauce-tureen while he put the fatal question.

He had not taken much notice of Lucy Floyd on the night of the ball; indeed, Lucy was scarcely a candle-light beauty; her hair wanted the sunshine gleaming through it to light up the golden halo about her face, and the delicate pink of her cheeks waxed pale in the glare of the great chandeliers.

But in fact, abstraction has a long-standing relationship with the body, which might even be considered the first artistic medium -- as is well demonstrated by the latest blockbuster at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, "Body Art: Marks of Identity," Nov. 20, 1999-May 29, 2000.
As Captain Cook and other 19th-century explorers of the South Pacific discovered, men in the Marquesas Islands tattooed their entire bodies (faces and hands included) with geometric designs that look a bit like abstract sea creatures.
If we can talk at all about an intersection between body art and modern abstraction, it would be in the boundlessness that full-body tattooing or painting shares with the allover painting of Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollock.
