Captain Corelli's Mandolin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Captain Corelli's Mandolin is a novel by Louis de Bernières.
It is a love story about an Italian captain (Antonio Corelli) and the daughter (Pelagia) of the local physician (Dr. Iannis) on the island of Cephallonia, and set against the background of the Italian/German occupation of the island during World War II.
A movie version of Captain Corelli's Mandolin was released in 2001, with Nicolas Cage as the Italian Captain Corelli, John Hurt as Dr Iannis, and Penélope Cruz as his daughter, Pelagia.

Filmtracks: Captain Corelli's Mandolin (Stephen Warbeck)
Captain Corelli's Mandolin: (Stephen Warbeck) Working together once again, composer Stephen Warbeck and director John Madden, who were awarded Academy Awards for film and score for their 1998 Shalespeare in Love, have set out on a rather unusual course of action for their latest collaboration, Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
Mandolins as a supplemental tool of ethnicity for a large orchestra are fine, but on their own for entire cues is too much to handle.
Instead, they rely on the delicate emotions of their mandolin, guitar, and woodwind solos to convey the love story trying to assert itself against the backdrop of world war.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001): Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruz, Christian Bale, John Hurt - PopMatters Film Review
The Captain and his men are dispatched to the paradisical Greek isle of Cephallonia in 1940, where they are supposed to secure the perimeter, or something like that.
Corelli, it turns out, is not only a captain, he's the official translator, able to speak Greek and German as well as his ostensibly native Italian.
The fact that Captain Corelli's Mandolin premieres in LA and all the ET and Access Hollywood reporters can come up with are a few red carpet shots of the stars and their new squeezes, well, that's just dull.

Serene and beautiful, Captain Corelli's Mandolin is a passionate tale of romance and war set on a grand, yet intimate scale.
Madden's reworking of Captain Corelli's Mandolin moves easily and expertly between joviality and serious devastation, as we explore the effects these have on both the physical landscape and the human spirit; the deterioration of Mandras being an underplayed but highly significant marker of this.
Captain Corellis Mandolin is a humble, honest love story but has all the unfortunate pitfalls of a novel dramatisation, this particular text being so tightly woven that it has proved difficult to unpick.

Captain Corelli (Cage) is one of these very men, who under certain orders must be accommodated in the doctor's home, much to the disgust of Pelagia.
In a twist of event that can only be described as ruthless, Captain Corelli is badly injured, needing immediate medical care something both father and daughter can offer.
For Corelli and Pelagia to hold such a great love for one another I would expect there to be more personal interaction and moments between the two, something that was unfortunately deficient.

One Italian officer, Captain Corelli, adopts an attitude of mutual co-existence with the Greeks and engages in such activities as music festivals and courting the daughter of a local doctor.
That attitude is most generously embodied by Captain Corelli (Nicolas Cage), who is instantly drawn to the Greek beauty Pelagia (Penélope Cruz) despite her engagement to Mandras (Christian Bale), a resistance fighter whose absence leaves Pelagia needy for affection.
Captain Corelli's Mandolin is a visually gorgeous and emotionally rich story of the beautiful Greek island of Cephallonia and its people during WWII.

But Corelli is a much more complicated and sophisticated character and I never believed Cage in the role for a minute.
Corelli, even the film Corelli, is written as a man who is passionate about music and pleasure, and scornful of politics, who has a sense of humour, even a sense of his own ridiculousness.
Although I am a bit biased since, as a child, my mother experienced the circumstances behind Captain Corelli's Mandolin, I must say that I was surprised not to hear any mention of Oscar nominations for the film.

Winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize in 1995, Corelli's Mandolin follows for sixty years the life of Pelagia and those who love her, beginning in World War II, when she and her father, a doctor on the small Greek island of Cephalonia, first get drawn into the war.
Corelli, whose response to "Heil, Hitler" was once "Heil, Puccini," is a musician, a mandolin player, who quickly establishes a singing group (meeting in the company's latrines) in preference to waging war.

CANOE -- JAM! Movies - Captain Corellis Mandolin Review - Mandolin needs some tuning
The Los Angeles premiere of Captain Corelli's Mandolin turned into a Hollywood freak show this week as the paparazzi descended on the venue like storm troopers.
What that did was obscure the reason all of them were there: To introduce English director John Madden's quaint World War II romance set on an idyllic Greek island occupied by Mussolini's opera-loving Italian troops in the 1940s.
While the big picture is getting relaxed, Corelli (played with overacting, scenery-chewing, mandolin-playing gusto by Cage) is falling in love with a local Greek woman (Cruz) who is the daughter of a doctor (John Hurt).
