One of Elton John's many 1970s pop gems, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC and THE DIRT BROWN COWBOY is a classic album filled with well-written, catchy tunes.
CAPTAIN FANTASTIC also features John's well-known version of the Lennon/McCartney favorite "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." John maintains the eccentric sonic elements of this tune, but makes it more dramatic and operatic, particularly as the song's refrain loops on and on towards the ending.

Elton John - The Captain & The Kid (Album Review)
Since releasing Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy in 1975, Elton John’s recording career has been spotty and uninspired, but after spending several decades favoring cheesy pop songs over artistically credible confections, he finally managed to reconnect with his roots on 2001’s Songs from the West Coast.
On Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, John and lyricist Bernie Taupin examined the misery and failure that plagued their lives before they achieved financial success.
By contrast, The Captain and The Kid catches the duo on the other side of their meteoric rise, and throughout the endeavor, they reflect upon their inability to cope with fame and fortune.

Elton John's follow-up to 1975's "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" lacks the vibrant immediacy of the original.
Yet Elton John tries a sequel with "The Captain and the Kid" (a follow up to his brilliant 1975 album "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy." The original album was an autobiographical account of John and lyricist Bernie Taupin's rise to creative dominance of the pop scene in the early '70s.
"The Captain and the Kid" is the pair's attempt to chronicle the years since "Captain Fantastic," and trying to cram 30 years of tumultuous history into 10 pop songs is either daring or quixotic.

CD Review: The Captain and The Kid by Elton John - Entertainment
Intended to be the sequel to 1975's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, The Captain and The Kid returns back to the same feel and storytelling type of music that rocketed (no pun intended) John and his musical partner-in-crime Bernie Taupin to fame more than 30 years ago.
Going back to his roots musically, as well as creating a sequel to one of his most successful albums (though, in my most humble opinion, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy could never hold a candle to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road), John and Taupin really complete the circle with this album.
Captain Fantastic was all about the two's fight to be successful whereas The Captain and the Kid, more than 30 years later, chronicles the struggles they endured once they achieved that success.
