StarTrek.nl - Welcome to the future - James T. Kirk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Kirk's renown began by becoming the youngest captain in Starfleet to date at 34 and the first captain to bring his starship back relatively intact after a five-year mission, having also gained a reputation as an independent whose success couldn't be argued even though he often bucked the system.
Kirk had the distinction of being the only cadet ever to beat the "no-win" Kobayashi Maru scenario; he had secretly reprogrammed the simulation computer, making it possible to win and earning himself a commendation for original thinking.
Bucking the odds once again, Kirk's loyal officers all risked their careers and lives to steal the Enterprise, retrieve Spock's body for refusion with his katra, and face down a Klingon crew in their way bent on taking Genesis - which included the destruction of Kirk's beloved starship.

The Top Infinite Reasons Kirk Is Better Than Picard   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Kirk would have warned Data though, out of genuine concern, that some in Starfleet might try to take Lall away from Data and experiment with her, but he would have done it as a caring father, firm but with love.
Kirk NEVER became involved with a female member of his crew, despite their lusting after him one and all ("Miri," "The Enemy Within"); clearly, he knew this would be an immense conflict of interest, while likewise it took an extraordinary woman to even merit Kirk's interest.
Kirk's entire crew has charm and humor-- even Spock, whose wit can be wicked, but he keeps it under control for reasons of dignity; Picard's entire crew seems to have perpetually tight underwear to the point that they need robo-geek for comic relief.

CBUB Fights: Captain Kirk vs. Captain Harlock
Kirk always had the Federation at his back in case things get rough, Harlock just has his ship and his crew against an empire, yet he's hung on and pulled through it all, from his first love's death before his eyes to the enslavement of his entire home planet, he just couldn't be brought down.
Kirk has it, Harlock doesn't, and since they are fighting for pride, that means Kirk is going to win.Kirk blew the Enterprise up rather than let it fall to the enemy.
And while Kirk and Co. have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat repeatedly (and with great vigor, as a good friend of mine is often wont to say), Harlock and his crew are no slouches in that department.

Even after the end of their five-year mission, it almost became a cliché that only Kirk and his crew could save the Federation from a new crisis – or at least Earth.
